Comparing images before copy/overwrite

Post » Thu Aug 25, 2011 9:53 am

I'm hoping someone can help me figure this out.

I used to have my computer set up so that when you copied and pasted/dragged and dropped images from one folder into another that had images with the same name, it would give you a visual comparison of the two images so you could pick the one you wanted to keep or give the option of renaming one of them. I don't know if this was a feature of an older version of Windows or if it was a third party software package, but now that I am playing around with textures for a new game and there are a lot of duplicate images, I'm really missing that feature. I can say that I used to use ACDSee and another program called ImageWalker before I moved on to Irfanview, so it could have been an earlier version of one of those programs. Beyond that, I don't know. I figured I would ask this question here since I'm sure others might know of or appreciate a feature like this when overwriting images. So, does anyone know of a setting I can change in Windows or a third party program I can use to get this back? I know there are duplicate image finders out there that scan your folders, but that's not what I'm looking for. The thumbnail comparison would only occur when copying and pasting images into a folder where images with the same name already exist. I hope I explained this well enough for someone to help me. Thanks.

You mean like this?

That's a shot from the confirm file replacement menu box of my copy of ACDSee v2.41. I have no idea if it's still present like that in the newer versions or if they got rid of it later on for some weird reason, but it sounds like exactly what you're looking for.

Yes, that's it exactly. Now I need to find ACDSee 2.41 again. Thanks a lot. I suspected it was that program, but I apparently updated to a newer version (before I switched to Irfanview) and didn't notice the feature loss until I started juggling around a lot of image files. See? Newer doesn't necessarily mean better.

Hey Urtho, are you running Windows 7? I can get a preview image now that I have installed ACDSee 2.41, but its so tiny I can't tell the difference between them. I'm thinking its a Windows 7 issue and am wondering if there is a way to change the setting size for these preview images.

I could have really used this kind of program before now, but is there is free version anywhere?

I don't think so. The copy of Version 2.41 I have is not working properly with Windows 7 at the moment, so I tried it on my laptop that is running XP and still no dice. It must be something in the options settings, either in the program itself or Windows 7. If Urtho pokes his nose back into this thread, maybe he would be willing to take a few screenshots of the options he has checked so I can compare them. Really annoying. Its such a simple concept for a program too. I wish I could find something comparable, but I've spent the last 4 hours looking and no luck. If anyone else knows of a program that does something similar, feel free to share. Or if some of the over-talented programmers who frequent this forum need a new challenge...

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit, so it may be acting differently for you on Windows 7. I'll take some screenshots for you of my option screens, gimme a few minutes...

EDIT -> Gah fixed fubar link syntax for Image 3, not sure what happened there...

Don't see anything in the options regarding that dialog box, have you tried using the magnify icons on the confirm dialog box? That can increase/decrease the size of the preview images you see when the "confirm replace" comes up.

Thanks Urtho, that was quick. It still doesn't work, so it must be a Windows 7 issue. I tried it in every compatibility mode and as administrator, but no luck. But I'm stubborn. I'll keep trying or looking for an alternative. Or hoping some programmer here decides that this might be a worthwhile endeavor to take up as a new project.

Only quick as I happened to need to get back on the forums to look something up not 5 min after you posted, heh.

It seems odd that this isn't working for you... You do realize that even for me, the preview thumbnail viewer with the move command isn't exactly full screen right? It's relatively small in the middle of my screen, it only looks large in the screenshot I posted as I narrowed the focus to that window only. The size of that box itself isn't alterable anywhere I can see, but you should be able to draw a selection box on the preview image and then click on it which allows zooming and panning of both images on specific areas to allow you to compare the two images for any differences.

If not, maybe try installing the program outside of Program Files rather than just running as Admin. Some funky W7 issues going on if none of this works for you as this program has worked flawlessly for me for over 10 years over many different Windows versions, hope you can figure it out.

Yeah, I remember how it used to come up. This is what it is doing now:

If I remove the program, all I get is text in that message box. The thumbnails go away. It must be a Windows 7 snafu. I'll try it outside Program Files to see if that helps.
