The Alchemy Throwdown

Post » Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:16 pm

Alchemy doesnt seem to be of much use as a weapon , never did , especially now that bows damage like they should , and 'poisoning' melee weapons was kind of dull and pointless . Poisons , debuffs , err etc. , hold no real , or viable offensive capabilitys . Limited is alchemy as a weapon , but not for a lack of potions ; musterd gas , nerve agents , phophorous pherite , chloriphorm , etc. , could be easily introduced if we only had a new " delivery " system ... Thrown .

Thrown , like a grenade . I can here the griping even now but think about it . Three hostiles standing around a fire , discussing , whatever , and you toss your " Potion of Dragon Spit " between them and Buooossshhh ! everyones on fire , screeming . Or , "Potion of Nighty night '' , Potion of Smells like %&*# " .... skys the limit . You could have AOE or targeted like acids the "disentigrate" armor , weapons , or both . Would be fun watching a guy running around trying to peeel off his armor screeming and jumping in the nearest pool of water ... sick I know , but yeah .

Explosive chemichal reactions , noxious fumes , halucanigins , sleep agents , corhosive liquids , etc , all fall short without a new " Delivery System " . Ideas , thoughts , criticism ?

POISONS will be handing for the enemies that don't die in one shot, like some deadra, or those new giant winged creatures they put in, what are those called again?

How about a alchemical throwup?
Seriously, this really seems like a good idea, making Alchemy as an offensive and passive skill

I would love to see that, or even just the trowing darts that Morrowind had. I want to make a Durzo Blint character (assassin- mainly poison based :dead: if you haven't read the Night Angle trilogy) and i would hate to wait for mods just to get darts or throwing knives, when [Censored] Fallout New Vegas has throwing weapons.

I actually made this as a mod for Morrowind, around 8 years ago! :D

It would be pretty neat if you were an alchemist who didn't want to use a weapon to deliver your poisons.

Yes this does seem like a good idea and would make an EXCELLENT PERK.

You can throw your potions. Actually it sounds pretty boring...

"Some people wish to throw their potions. That seems foolish to M'aiq. If you hold your potion, you only need... one?" I think M'aiq has some explaining to do!

I am fine with weapon delivered poisons, etc - I use stealth based archery, so if going against someone a little tougher, poison will do the trick nicely. If you add in thrown poisons, that requires a throwing skill separate from that, and we already know there are no thrown weapons, so I think you're reaching here. Perhaps next time around.

Won't happen, why? Cause there are no throwing weapons. But you are basically talking bout grenades, molotov cocktails and the such, thus I approve.

It's okay... but this idea is asked about in almost every day at http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/.

And is rejected every time :cold: .

Just saying, but you'd either need to be Batman or a sorcerer to reliably throw a knife or axe. You need to be a certain distance away, throw it perfectly, and aim well, or it'll be useless. Now I know this is TES, and there's magic... but why not just shoot lightning at somebody instead of an intricate attack involving a toxic boomerang?

Hey now you take that statement back.

People have been using throwing axes and throwing knives as weapons for hundreds of years. Even throwing spears.

Then we have modern-day magic tricks involving throwing a knife at an apple one someone's head whilst BLINDFOLDED. Then we also have dart tournaments where the players stand many meters away from the dartboard yet get perfect and reliable treble 20s. You underestimate the sheer skill of humankind.

yea they did this in dragon age it wasn't bad but it was a little unbalenced in my opinion since it gave anyone AOE but that wouldnt realy be a problem in an E S game.

Good for making money.

Although, I would like more powerful poisons, and some poisons lasting several strikes. That way it's a good idea to bring a poison into a fight. Maybe make them cost a lot more, so Alchemy is desirable to some extent.

What makes it hard to throw knives and axes is that they rotate and you need the pointy end to hit first. So you need to know how far you are, and to gauge the rotations correctly so it hits pointy end first. Hard, but doable with training. The thing is potions don't have a pointy end to worry about, so a fireball potion or whatever would seem to work out fine, you just have to hit the target like with any other missile weapon or if an AoE hit something near them. I'll point out that some thrown weapons don't flip, or are edged in a way so that a pointy end is always hitting the target, so those should also work.(Darts, spears, shuriken, chakram etc) As for why you wouldn't throw a lightning bolt, because you are skilled in alchemy and not destruction, you are out of magicka, you are silenced or probably a couple other reasons I can't think of.

Sounds like a great idea, although I disagree that the poisons in Oblivion were useless. You could get some pretty sweet damage once you got a good set of alchemy kit and you reached master/expert. I'd shoot one arrow into someone and pull up a chair with my character and watch them die before they got to me, lol.

With the new spells that place "traps" or what looks like "area damage" you never know maybe this will be possible and it's one of those cool secrets they are keeping under wraps. Explosive acids, fatigue damage gas clouds, health damage clouds, basically area affect anything clouds would be totally awesome.

Even if you could shoot the bottle with an arrow and have it explode would be pretty cool for placing traps if your an archer/thief style character.
