For roleplaying reasons, and just to be different, i'm going to take a character through Morrowind and use the 'alternate' way of doing things. Get the left-handed Wraithguard andsacrfice the health, rather than going throught he looong process of becoming the Nerevarine.

However, I still want mah Corpus.

If I catch it (provided you can?) can I just go see Fyr and will he be willing to let me try the potion as though Caius had sent me? Or is the whole thing MQ only. Because if thats the case, I may have to follow the MQ up til that point and THEN do the other thing. Would be a pain but still better than going to each tribe and all the council members. *shudder*.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to run the MQ in order to (1)get the disease and (2) cure it. I know I've been to Ilunibi before Caius sends me and Dagoth Gares isn't there.

Because Dagoth Gares is the only one who give you corpus and that guy is scripted, which means the player must do the MQ in order unless you want to ruin your game with a couple of console commands to get the disease+cure.

And how can you get wraithguard if not by Vivec??

By killing him rather than going through the Ashlander and House trials. It would take some roleplayingfor motive, or a knowledge of him having Wraithguard, but thats the beauty of roleplay. If only Vivec didn't come across as such a nice guy.

Ah, its scripted. I see. I was never sure (fighting Corpus creatures I way always worried i'd catch it). I might resort to the console commands; wouldn't be the first time. Perhaps catch it when helping that shopkeeper with the boxed in creature, then go to Fyr and pretend he is willing to help out.
