"The game clearly tells you which items are direct upgrades and even what the best items you are carrying are. "

Im not too happy about this as I feel it puts more 'game' into my 'world' than Id like.
It promotes powergaming and implies people arent clever enough to look at stats.
I never really cared about the 'best' weapon in an Elder Scrolls game as I believe this is the wrong type of game to powergame.
I prefer picking a weapon that fits my character and that I find pleasant to look at.
For instance, in Oblivion I always used a plain silver or daedric longsword and never didnt I give Umbra back to Clavicus.

In my mind this is a bit like the quest compass.
Hand holding and directing the player down a pre-set path when the premise of the game should be discovery, exploration and choice.
Not going for the best damage per second, to me that is wholly immaterial and I wouldnt like being told by the game that my silver dagger isnt good enough.

How do other people feel about this?
I would like to hear opinions.

Ill throw my post in here again from the end of the last thread.

Its probably been put in to help compensate for the extremely lacking amount of info on the menu screens.

If you want to compare 5 swords in your inventory you have to look at one, remember the stats, look at the next, remember the stats, etc, etc.

I don't see the problem.

Neither do I.

But since I made a mockup of a possible alternate sorting system maybe have it added to the OP then get everyone to support it so they'll use it and we can all have a break from this madness.

The menu would open at the categories section and you navigate to the left to get to sorting options. The sorting options would also change depending on category because obviously weapon damage doesn't apply to book or potions etc.

I don't really see the problem. I don't think that they are saying we are too stupid to look at stats. I think they are trying to make it more convenient for you by saying this weapon has the best stats. Most people pic the strongest sword anyways.

It's not like crappy weapon VS Super Weapon, it sounds like a convenient organizational tool.

The problem here is that apparently, there is a "best" item. Shame that again, weapons will not be 'different', but 'worse/better' than their alternatives.

Sure, why not? Whether I sort by value or damage, or something like this which "weighs" the item stats... Not that big a difference.

As the original poster of the first thread I dont really see the need for a new one.

I presented a worry and there were plenty of people offering insight and perspectives in the first thread.
As I see it, everything that reasonably can be said about this has been said already and the last few pages pretty much descended into bickering and snide remarks.

So I was pretty happy with having just one thread for this and that is why I did not make a new one.

Looking through a bunch of item stats in a game to pick the best one is hardly as difficult as, say for example, Quantum Chromodynamics. Doesn't make you clever. Getting a new sword half an hour into your first ever TES game, and selecting it because it has a 'better than what you had before' icon does not necessarily make you stupid.

This doesn't bother me, but I'm sorry to see it bothers others. Can't make everyone happy with everything in the game.

I'm with you.

That tells me the lack of variety in terms of choice we'll have. We're forced to use a weapon we may not enjoy if we want to be the most powerful.

Fortunately I don't want to be the most powerful so I don't care! I'll use that rusty iron dagger if it suits my character the most!

Instead of stats they should provide visual clues to the efficiency of the weapon. Base it on the type of metal/material of the blade, how the hilt was produced, what kind of inscriptions are on it (runes that glow brighter the more powerful they are), the overall condition of the weapon, does it have good quality of gems/ornaments on it.

Funny how we rely on stats to understand how a weapon works; i think the next step should be to teach us the visual clues then allow us to determine which is better - throughout the game allowing us to learn and understand runes (similar to dragon shouts) which allows us to harness more power from the weapon.

Not really.

Plenty of games give you a choice where one isnt better than the other, just different.

This is how I feel for the most part. After getting my armor from the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion, I never replaced it because I loved it so much. I probably would have had an easier time if I had upgraded, but I was happier for it. :)
