Morrowind won't start up...

Post » Sat Aug 27, 2011 4:57 pm

When I try loading it up, it just loads indefinately. I waited for 20 minutes the first try, and it never started. So I tried again, and it's still going. Please help, I've waited a long time for this. I tried another forum, but noone would respond so... I came here.
Thanks in advance.

What do you mean by loads indefinitely? Do you get a black loading screen, blank screen, no change, no errors?

It's recommended, even with Steam, you install the game outside of program files. In Steam, that means your whole steam dir must be somewhere else (you can cut and paste without breaking anything).

Something to check is if an error popped up behind the game window; that can happen and will make it look like it's forever loading. Try running in windowed mode (always a good debug method) and watch for such things.

If you have any more info on how it's not loading, messages or screenshots, please post those. Your system's CPU and video card may also be helpful.

By load, I mean it just says "Please wait while your game loads." or whatever. Not sure what you mean with the other thing, just take the entire Steam folder out of program files?

CPU:Intel® Premium® 4 CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs) (this I checked with and it meets requirements)
Video Card:Intel® 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family

The "please wait" screen is in Steam? If you look in the process manager, does Morrowind.exe show up anywhere? Has Steam installed and run all of the things it needs to (DirectX redists and such)?

As for moving out of program files, yes. The protection on that folder causes a lot of problems with various apps, including Morrowind. You're better off not running old games from it.

It says this: (at top) The Elder Scrols III: Morrowind - Steam (below that) Preparing to launch The Elderscrolls III: Morrowind...

And just to be safe and reconfirm, the ENTIRE Steam folder or just the directory? Or does it matter?

You should have C:\Program Files\Steam, move that directory to somewhere that is not protected. If you have a second hard drive, that's usually a good choice, but in your user's files works (for single-user systems). You can put it in C:\Steam, but that takes some playing with permissions to work properly, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Also, no, I can't find any Morrowind.exe. I only found a "morrowind content.ncf" in "steamapps" which is what I meant by directory by the way.

Seems a little complex, I figured I could just drag the Steam file out of Program Files. I really have to delete everything except Steam.exe and steamapps? I don't wanna screw something up.

Not to mention that I have no other harddrive.

Edited again, I found the Morrowind.exe. So all I have to do is move it to the desktop or something? Will that work?

No, you cannot just move Morrowind.exe, that will break the game.

You can just drag the Steam folder out of Program Files, that will work. You don't have to delete all that stuff, it's just good practice.
If necessary, you can put it in the root of the C drive. By user files, I meant probably your desktop.

Thanks, that is what I meant by the way. Sorry for being unclear.

Anyways, I fixed the problem. I simply have to launch it directly from the exe, and it loads in no time at all. I'm loving this game, it might just be my new favorite game. (My old one was Oblivion.) I knew it was rough on new players, but it literally says "You're on your own now. Good luck." This was the best introduction to a game I have ever seen. It was short and sweet, and then it throws you into the world.

I am having graphical problems though. Things like doors will flash in and out rapidly when I'm a little far away. The water looks like cement, and it flashes really bad when I move. Then when the game pauses, i.e. goes into a menu or conversation, it turns white. These things annoy me, but I don't care, I was too busy being impressed by how well it actually ran on my piece of junk. It actually looks pretty nice.

That being said, should I still move it from Program Files to just the C drive? I think you mentioned it being advisable regardless.
Also, I heard it has CTD problems, how often is that?
