How do you complete a quest without actually doing it?

I have finished Dead Money. I am on my way to start Old World Blues. Just before or after Primm, I have one of those "quest completed" show up. It says Booted is completed. Thing is, I never even attempted to do this quest. I was no where near where you had to be, and it showed up all of a sudden. So WTF? How can you complete a quest if you did nothing for it?

I had Boone with me but that was in the begining of the game, but I sent him home, when I got Ceaser's Mark. So I have no companions with me for a long time. I did, HH, DM for no companions for a very long time now. So it's not like I have any companions that would do it for me.

So now that the quest is completed, how will this effect my reputation with Ceaser? I went to the screen where you see your reputation, and I don't see no rep with the Legion at all. So am I ok with Ceaser and the Legion? I got so sick and tired of the Assassins coming after me, it's nice not to be worried about them, well for now at least. :P

I play on the 360 if that makes a difference.

If I remember right Booted is the quest to free the poweder gangers the legion took from Nipton? Often when I go to do that quest I find NCR patrols near the camp. Maybe one of these patrols has taken out all the legion near there? Once you get the mark it resets your standing with the legion to neutral which is helpful for however you plan on doing the game. You will always have to go to the Fort. Just like coming out of the Lucky 38 and being asked to go to the NCR embassy rests yours tanding with them to neutral.

I know I've failed quests without knowing why.

I know I've failed a quest before because some quest related NPC was out wandering and got himself killed. Took me forever to figure out what happened.

Even if the patrol killed the Legionaries that wouldn't complete the quest, as that doesn't happen until you actually free the Powder Gangers. Unless the game assumed that the NCR freed them, which would be kind of odd as they shoot PGers on sight.

The Mark and the Message actually reset your negative reputation with the respective factions, which means you could do a bunch of quests to boost rep, then be a complete asshat to both groups up to that point, and still end up with Idolized reputation as a result if done correctly. :bonk:

Good point. I never thought of the needing to actually free them part. In that case I've no clue at all how that quest got completed.

I also act like a asshat to both groups before the rep is reset.
