The symbol, despite being a caricature also resembles Alduin from what we have seen from the collector's ed figure.

The symbol is also marked on Septims(currency) with script "Praise Be Akatosh - And All The Divines"
I have a Septim that sits on my desk(from the Oblivion collectors edition)

Because it symbolizes Akatosh, and thus Alduin? And let's not forget the civil war between the Empire and the Stormcloaks.

I thought it was of Akaviri origin?

That Silver dragon is the Empires emblem, as far as i know.
Not sure why its used as the "symbol" of Skyrim.

" The exotic weaponry and the armour they used in the First Era has been adopted by warriors throughout the continent, and their dragon has been adopted as one of the most potent symbols of the Septim Empire."

Knew I had read it somewhere

Just like everyone else said, it is the symbol of the empire.

It symbolizes the downfall of the empire (cracked, wore down, etc) After the Kings assassination some wanted to secede from the falling empire while others did not, this conflict lead to the civil-war in Skyrim, which was the last major event foretold in the prophecy leading to Alduin's return.

It's not the symbol for Skyrim, it's the symbol of the Empire, and it represents Akatosh.
Akatosh = Alduin.
Skyrim is about Alduin.
Makes sense to me.

It's also on the cover of Morrowind..

Are people just guessing it represents Akatosh, or is there some kind of contradiction in lore?

This may be an EPIC LATE QUESTION ...

But I'd really like to know,

Why are there so many Skyrim Emblems [i.e. the Silver Dragon] in and around Oblivion?

Seriously. Just take a stroll through the Imperial City. I see them everywhere. :L

<- Is not up-to-tune with Lore.

Remember, when in doubt the http://www.uesp.net/ is your best friend. :deal:

It's the symbol of Akatosh, and Alduin - the antagonist of Skyrim - is the Nord version of Akatosh.

No it does represent Akatosh. I'm trying to find the evidence, check back in a bit. For now, here is the UESP on http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Akatosh.

Where are you getting that it's not Akatosh?
