List of fixes and one last shot before waiting

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:52 am

I'm waiting for my local Gamestop to open so I can go buy another game, but I'm going to give Fallout:NV one last shot taking all I've heard for "fixes" for game freezes into consideration.

Here's the fix list I'm going by, not completed in this order:
-------------------------------------------
1. Unplug all USB ports. (PS Eye, gone. Recharging cord, gone.)
2. Turn off internet connection to PS3. (wireless connection off)
3. Delete old install and let Fallout:NV reinstall (whiped and reinstalled)
4. Delete all save, trophy and install files from Fallout 3 (transferred to thumb drive and deleted from PS3)
5. Delete all save files from alternate characters on Fallout:NV (transferred to thumb drive and deleted from PS3)
6. Never turning on Pip Boy Radio or light (done, and in sound options turned radio off)
7. Turning off auto-save (check)
8. After every major event, quest, fight, etc. wait/sleep for 72 hours so the game resets characters and objects (will do)
9. Don't play for more then 5 hours straight. (I'm guessing I won't be able to, but ok, I'll bite.)
10. Cross your fingers. (and toes)

UPDATE added another step:
11. Turned off music as well.
Wish me luck!

11. Ask why the hell we should jump through hoops to play a game when the problems are Bethesda's fault and no other PS3 game has these issues.

So i've played after doing all this for 3 hours now. I only went to two towns, mostly just wondered the Mojave, which is where I seemed to have the most issues with freezing. To my suprise, not one freeze (hard reboot) yet. Promising, although, I so do miss listening to the PipBoy radio. The Mojave just isn't the same without it. I have to back to my real life for awhile, but I'll play again later this afternoon and update again. At least the game was playable for awhile, turns out, it's a pretty cool game.

I totally understand your frustration, trust me. I'm just trying to figure out how people can still play and work around some annoying circumstances for the time being. I get it if people have given up. I'm just still being stubborn about it.

Another hour and a half in and still no lock ups to report. Test going pretty smoothly.

Total of 4 hours 30 minutes of no freezes, and this from someone that used to get them all the time. I'm following the fix steps I listed exactly. Not quite the full experience but by far, more then I was getting out of the game before.

Step 12 : Open bin, Throw F:NV in it. Job is done, life is peachy again. ;)

Well, after 6 hours of gameplay, 3 hours at a time with a short break. I have good news and bad news.

Bad first:
I locked up again almost right at 6 hours.
This time it was at a loading screen, going from one indoor area to another. (I've seen this reported, indoor freezes and loading screen freezes, both of which never experienced it myself until now.)

Good news:
It took almost 6 hours to freeze, usually it's about 20 minutes.
I could still access the XMB menu. (so it wasn't really a hard reboot, but a soft one. again, this was new for me... usually it's a hard boot)

Might as well try this to be honest, see if it improves the playability of the game. I did make the effort before I started the game to delete the game data and all the DLC's of Fallout 3, but not the save data - will try that next time I play.

And about the auto saves and the save system, has anyone found a way to keep the sizes of the saves as low as possible? Because I've noticed that the bigger my saves have got, the more audio and performance issues I have been experiencing. Any help is appreciated.

Please don't take this sarcasticly, but if you don't complete as many quests and you pick up fewer items the saves seem to be smaller.
