Hand-holding on videogames

"How can a no-magic, no-bow, sword fighter fight a dragon (or other flying creature)?"

He uses his dragon shouts!

"But I dun wanna be the dovakiin!"

Wow, you just want to ruin the game for yourself. Well, if you're not going through the main quest, then there's your problem solved. No need to tackle dragons until you're strong enough.

The thing about game design is you either have to design it for anyone and everyone, or specific sorts. I like that Deus Ex: Human Revolution really symbolizes this. You don't have to hack into this room, and sometimes you can even sneak inside, but if you want the goodies that will help you later then that's the route you have to take. Don't want to? Fine, it's for the people who enjoy that playstyle. Just as a locked door in a village shows a thief's passageways into the world, a dragon is not something a cowardly man should be taking on. Not saying thieves are cowardly, mind you, but the options are there for you to do something. If you don't want to take them then that is your fault. You can wait for a dragon to ground itself and then jump on it with daggers, but a sneak attack should not be available all the time.

You shouldn't be able to lockpick past the final boss, nor should you be able to break open every door. Different people will experience different things and it is impossible to design something that is accessible to all types of play. Sometimes there will be obstacles you cannot overcome, mountains you cannot climb, and foes that will continue to stand in opposition. That's life. That's a well designed game.

I mostly agree, however the game needs to be balanced to some extent. Pure professions should have strengths and weaknesses, but in no way should they be so debilitating, that it is impossible to complete most of the game going down such a path. Struggling to do so is fine, requiring great preparation, ingenuity, and tactics is fine, but being absolutely impossible no matter what is not fine.

"Help, help, a dragon is attacking!"

Don't worry young peasant. I'll kill your dragon.

"With what? You're wearing leather."

Pfft. You obviously haven't heard of me. I am Merryweather, the greatest thief in the land. *flex*

"...thief?"

Yep. *does two backflips* As you can see, I am light, agile, and able to dodge anything. *beams*

"It's a dragon."

I've got my trusty dagger right here!

"But...it's a bloody DRAGON"

Fare thee well peasant, I must be off!

"..." *scratches head*

Heehee. :D
