Would you like to see more extreme racial benefits and weakn

Post » Fri Sep 02, 2011 10:54 am

As long as there would still be some races without a crippling weakness. So that people who aren't in to that would have something to pick.

(Personally, I've never picked anything in Oblivion with a big weakness, race or birthsign. Of course, I also tend to forget about any activated powers, so.... Yeah, I pick my race by looks mostly. So, based off the presets they showed, only choices this time are Imperial or Nord..... depends on how much customization you can do.)

edit: yeah, Altmer had the doubly-whammy against them in Oblivion. Kind of strange looking, plus the racial weakness. Nope, never played one of those.

The weakness for Altmers in Oblivion was easy enough to counter.
Pick the Atronach birtsign when you come out of the sewers (+250 magicka at lvl1 is amazing btw) and half the things enemies flung at you would be absorbed and towards the end it was easy enough to cover the other 50% which made you mostly immune to magic barring reflected spells.

But yes it would be nice that all races get an active and passive bonus that's coupled with a negative one. Though technically all races had negative points due to lowered attributes.

I do play Altmer Atronach as well, but the thing is - you need to actually counter the drawbacks, it is easy enough, true, but only if you put some thought in to it :) The other races simply have nothing you have ro work around

breton were very vulnerable in lower level with out shield (which weakens spell casting same goes with armour) a bandit archer could easly kill breton because of low health and armour restriction on spells

breton are only strong against magic untill in later levels when there magic can by pass the armour and shield restrictions

it is shocking at how people are so anti breton when its clear skyrim is warrior orientated game

later level warrior specialize in specific melee weapon type with archory and shield perk for sprinting and being resistant to magic at same time rendering mage kyting tactic void

leave the breton's alone :violin:

Here's just a couple ideas, just to give an example of how it could be done:

Altmer - Keep them as they are, they're fine and already balanced
Bosmer - Bonus to running speed and/or firing speed with marksman, swings slower with two handed weapons
Argonian - Keep as-is, though perhaps a frost weakness would feel fitting...
Breton - Minor magicka bonus (more than everyone else but less than Altmer), no other bonuses besides this
Dunmer - Keep as is, offering an all around well-balanced race.
Imperial - Keep as-is: no strengths and no weaknesses, aside from Voice of the Emperor being useful in unlocking quests (helps the player bypass meeting other requirements to obtain quests)
Khajiit - Increased running speed and jump height. Suffers from a 50% weakness to all poison, disease and negative alchemical effects (for example, where a poison might remove 20 agility for an imperial for 20 seconds, the Khajiit loses 40)
Nord - Keep as-is. Frost resistance and Woad, nothing more. No major strengths and no major weaknesses, offering a balanced warrior race.
Redguard - Can swing swords faster, slight running speed increase, takes twice as long to cast spells
Orc - Has minor magic resistance (30%-50%) and swings axes slightly faster (15%), has a constant +5% damage resistance, runs slower (10-20%) than other races

It's not perfect, but just a rough idea. This way, we have 5 classes that offer noticeable benefits and weaknesses whereas another 5 remain very bland, letting players build them up as they please, with a bland race in every gameplay style (Combat, Magic and stealth).

I like your idea's for benefit/weakness but...

Who in the right mind gives a warhammer, war axe or a claymore to a BOSMER? :P

Yes. Too late though, we have seen enough racial powers to see they're just bonuses.

Yes I'd also like more diverse quests and possibilities depending on your race.

Do we know them all or just tidbits of info on some?

That would be pretty cool, but it would most likely not happen. Female/Male quests could happen though.

Altmer's get to join a small group of Summerset Isle mages, Orcs have a quest to do with smithing an amazing piece of armor, etc. :P

We don't know them all but all racial powers we've seen so far were just bonuses.

Well that's a damned shame.

The races system has potential; potential that has been recently cut down to an extent by the removal of attributes. They should expand upon it and exploit it more, and this would be a great way to do it.

Altmer born under the sign of The Apprentice.

Rain down destruction to your hearts content but merely touch a candle flame and you'll burn to death.

Anyway great idea, OP, all races should have better bonuses as well as more weaknesses, would make for a far more interesting playthrough just by picking race alone (along with the skills you choose to excel at).

Or the Atronauch where you practically have to kill yourself to regain magic.

Glarthir had a dagger though, if I'm not mistaken? Plus, warhammers would look extremely silly on Bosmer bodies, most likely about as half as big as them. :P
