Guard difficulty

Post » Sat Sep 03, 2011 8:44 pm

So it was announced that Guards are taking a nerf, and wont be unstoppable killing machines...

So how tough/weak are Guards going to be? In oblivion it felt like you kinda hit this magical level where you no longer cared about guards. So im worried guards will be too easy to fight too early on, kinda defeating the purpose of having guards.....

For example, if/when i commit to genocide i wanna good resistance, ya know? I wanna feel like I earned the pile of corpses, not like "Man, i shoulda done when i was lvl 15..." I'd be kinda disapointed if getting away with murder was too easy... no challenge there! =P

Every reviewer so far has said stuff along the lines of "and they were no match for my dovahkiin".

And this is at level 1 - 5?

Yeah, I hate that they were capable of enduring huge amount of punishments and 15 arrows penetrating their heart. :teehee:

Well, it's just petty barbarian guards. Not infidels from the imperial court.

I figure they are likely on even footing with the player.

So with the difficulty down, they should be fairly quick kills, but at normal difficulty pose a decent threat.

if they can beat guards between levels 1 and 5 thats just [censored]. i would say guards patroling roads or small settlemtns should be level 20 and guard protecting more important things like castles or nobles etc should be between levels 30 and 40 depending on how important whatever it is they are guarding is.

Reviewers seem to get promptly owned by guards from the articles I've read.

They better be difficult. Why else would they be guards? I felt like I earned every crime in Oblvion and Morrowind because of the staunch defenders of the realms.

PS magazine (the one that was released before E3) had a section on this titled guards it said:

While Skyrim's lawmen won't sport the high-end equipment they did in Oblivion, they're nonetheless tough enough to take us down-no matter how powerful we get.Lucky for us, the game's divided into nine areas, or "Holds," and it's possible to be a wanted criminal in one and an upstanding citizen in the rest.

What do you think? Are they full of crap or is this true?

They aren't just protecting the townsfolk from you, but also from other felons. I once saw a Argonian get sniped by the Anvil guard because she stole an apple. Guards will easely take down any "civilian" NPC. And by that i mean the local baker, the fisherman etc. But the Dragonborn, whom fights Dragons for breakfast? Hell no.

I remember reading an article of Skyrim. The person playing the game kinda of pissed off the guards and started fighting him. One of the guards had a bow and when the guards shot him it took down half of his health :chaos: . So I suspect guards to be very hard.

Guards should be tough. They are the consequence of your law breaking. Steal from somebody, expect to go to jail or pay a fine. If you refuse, prepare to face the wrath of a Guard.

Guards should not always be powerful enough to be a threat to someone who single-handedly takes down dragons.

I don't like it in Morrowind when my level 1 character beat 2 guards all by himself and get away without incurring any more bounty....

I wasn't aware that they even implemented a difficulty slider yet, where's your source?

I know, I suppose every guard could be a Dovahkiin... and we thought we were special. :cryvaultboy:

If every guard was a Dovahkiin....Anduin picked one hell of a bad place to invade....

would be interesting to see someone steal something in view of a guard, and the guard just use the push shout to blow them into a wall....

Yeah, I mean I'm not saying they should be wimps, but every joe guard shouldn't be tough. Ideally, there would be tiers of guards with fewer captains, commanders, elite soldiers, "hero" guards with veteran accomplishments etc, but the main threat should be overwhelming numbers.

That's what I'm a bit nervous about. Obviously in the end, everything can be compared to dragon killing.

"WTF? I can kill a dragon, but I can't kill this measly thing?!"

Putting in mechanics that will let us solo dragons gives the perspective that nothing in the game should be much of a challenge for a dragon-slayer.

Was about to suggest the same thing. We should definately have some "amateur" recruit guard's watching the entrance/walking along roads doing simple stuff, and we should have more seasoned veterans taking care of more serious stuff. I would love to have a ranking system, gives the guards more depth as well, instead of being generic peace-makers.

And lastly I agree with the fact that it's the number of guards that should overwhelm you, not the single guard himself.. unless he turns out to be the captain of the legion or something.

To me its not the matter of their difficulty, but whether or not they are psychopathic like they were in oblivion. You should be able to hide from them if you are not in a obvious spot. It was almost impossible for me to lose them in Oblivion, which would always piss me off.
