Blocking system

Post » Sat Sep 03, 2011 12:59 pm

First off, I know how blocking works in TES and, generally, how it is planned for Skyrim so this is not a topic about what is or should be in the game. just want to see what people think

1) Blocking reduces incoming damage but doesnt prevent it -
with this system, even a 100 block skill warrior carrying a daedric shield would die to a rat if he had, say, 1 health left. My problem with this is that against strong enough or numerous enough enemies, or against even weak ones, at low enough health, blocking becomes pointless.

2) Blocking blocks all damage, but drains stamina.

my preferred system. Instead of reducing damage, it would instead reduce stamina, with better skill/shields reducing stamina damage taken. the idea is that you get tired from blocking to a point where you can't block anymore, which is when you take health damage.

thoughts?

If you want people to vote for one idea over another, you cold make it a poll?
:)
I go with system 2. It makes sense (in my head).

Ultimately I would still give it a chance to 'strike through' and hurt you on occasion. This is to prevent you from being invincible by drinking potions/eating food that restores your stamina. Furthermore, I would link stamina to HP. So the lower your HP, the progressively worse your ability to block those blows. You shouldn't be able to run the full country mile when your character is on the footsteps of death!

System 2 makes more sense and seems more tactical.

Would shield condition or weapon type play a role in your idea? Just curious

chance to blow thru the block could be a contested "roll" bet attacker's weapon skill vs blcok skill. i used an OB mod that made HP affect max stamina, so i guess i posted with that in mind

EDIT:
definitely have shield condition and attack weapon matter. with blunt weapons more effective vs shields than bladed perhaps?
