problem saving game

Post » Sun Sep 04, 2011 9:19 pm

I've been playing oblivion without expansions for awhile with few problems. Recenly I reinstalled the os and bought the goty edition. I'm havig trouble in that I can't load from a save game. There is an auto save that appears in the menu, but despite saving and getting confirmation that save was sucessful it doesn't appear in the load screen. After having this happen I uninstalled then defragged my hard drive hoping to wipe out the settings. Even after reinstalling both disks the earlier save was still there and I was unable to create a savegame that appeared in the load screen. Sounds like I missed deleting something after the uninstall, perhaps registry files?

I have also played morrowind for many years and have gotten fairly good at managing files in that game, not that I ever modded but used over 100 mods on my system at once. This is only relevant because after installing the game I placed my old savegame file in the oblivion folder along with the config files. I reasoned that if the game were invalid that at worst I'd have to uninstall then reinstall the game.

Since I'm already posting I'll ask a few questions that I've wondered about but weren't serious enough to warrent a forum topic. Oblivion doesn't recognize my video card and has set my video settings to medium. The game plays and I'm not sure but I think my card rates half way between medium and high. My game lags a little if I am in a large combat with my video set to high, but I am withholding my opinion for now. Occasionally I'll hit a point within a cell at which point the screen goes black. I'm sure it isn't a spell effect and if I step in any direction or shift my view (mouse direction) the video comes back on.

Here are my specs:
Amd athalon 64x2 dual 4200+
2.21ghz, 3.25 GB ram
Windows xp pro service pack 3
Nvidia GeForce 8500GT

I do need to download the updated driver for the video card, but I don't see a savegame issue steming from that and the video issue happened with the same card with the latest driver.

Thank you

Save games are stored in My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves. Put your old saves there, and they should show up. (this was new in oblivion.)

If you don't have the same mods loaded, chances are good, your save won't load either.

That's good to know. I didn 't have any mods loaded so the only change is from non expansion to both.

I'm still wondering what problms I have since I can't save from within the game?

Check in your saves folder, and see if anything is actually showing up there, aside from the one autosave.

Try deleting your oblivion.ini, in My Games\Oblivion. (the game will re-detect your hardware when you start it back up again.)

After you told me about the new location for the save folder I copied and pasted and the old game worked just fine. Thank you very much.
