Semi-pacifism, now a viable gameplay option?

Post » Mon Sep 05, 2011 4:45 am

So I've always thought that playing as a semi-pasifistic character in TES games would be a pretty interesting way to play. To stay in the shadows and scour dungeons unseen, and only kill when absolutely necessary. This really hasn't been an option for me before, since many of the best equipments and items were only scavenged from the cold, dead bodies of my victims.

So I was thinking about the Pickpocket skill in Skyrim, with the ability to steal equipped items and increase it to the point where there was really no risk in doing so: Would it not be a really interesting way to play through Skyrim; to be able to leave a dungeon with as much items you would from an ordinary slaughter-fest, and your enemies would only be left poor and unknowing, and you utterly unscathed?

One of the issues here though would be that when you are confronted with an enemy, your combat skills would propably be lacking. Though I believe there will be ways around this.

It's propably been suggested before, but I just wanted to share this idea anyway ^^
What do you guys think?

I like to kill my enemies, but it's a cool idea if your a pacifist.

I think it'll be a playthrough I'd play. Would be more fun and funny to rob bandits, guards, normal citizens naked.

I suspect that you won't be able to complete the main quest without killing dragons, but there's a decent chance that it will (at least in theory) be possible to complete it and many side quests without killing NPCs.

However, it'll probably be extremely hard - non-violent gameplay has never been a defining feature of The Elder Scrolls, like it has for Deus Ex.

It's definitely a neat idea, but I don't know how it'd play out considering how much the Elder Scrolls focuses gameplay on combat.

I may have to try it just to see how workable it might be. I don't know... maybe create like a pacifist Shaolin Monk type of character. Humble and pacifistic, but able to kick people into a low Nirn orbit if they persist in harassing me.

*ponders this for a minute*

That might be kind of cool actually.

Hopefully, you can talk your way out of most situations if you so choose and have the right stats for it.

It would be something that I'd attempt in a normal play through and likely fail at.

But seriously it's a good idea and I'd like to see it playable.

Yeah, there are of course essential kills, but I think the challenge of this kind of gameplay would make it more interesting :)

Speechcraft NEEDS to be like the speech skill in Fallout 3/NV, enough said or it's just a useless diversion that should have been scrapped.

You'd probably be relying on potions and poisons a lot for sticky situations. (That's a good thing) So your primary skills would be sneak, pickpocket and alchemy, possibly illusion too. Also remember smithing and enchanting are viable skills too so you don't necessarily have to take stuff off of corpses to get really good equipment.

I don't think this should be an option in a world as rugged and often brutal as The Elder Scrolls.

Especially when you're destined to fight dragons, in order to save the world.

This will propably work in many conflict and dialog-situations, though going through a dungeon relying on your witty charm when up against 3 Ice Golems might prove somewhat disastrous :P

TES games have always been about playing how you want to play and be who you want to be (you've propably never heard this sentence before right?), and if this is a viable option, it will only add to that.

I hope so. The more options we have in Skyrim, the better.
