Oblivion and Windows 7

Post » Tue Sep 06, 2011 8:21 am

I have just recently bought a new computer (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103373 ) and I'm having difficulties getting it to play. Actually, it won't start up at all.

This is an error message simular to the one I keep getting: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/268/oblivionerror.jpg/

I have updated my graphics driver a few days ago and tried it again today but it still didn't work. Is there anything else I need to update to get it to work? Or will it just not work with this new of a computer?

More details, please. If you actually have that computer then it's not a graphical issue. When does this happen? Are you running mods? OBSE? Bash? Background programs? Where is the Oblivion.exe directory (i.e. C:\Program Files)? Are you able to play in-game or does this happen upon starting?

Edit: You didn't torrent Oblivion, did you? Did you update all your drivers (GPU, too)? I know it sounds dumb, but you have enabled all the date files (.esm, .esp, ect)?

Yes, that is the actual computer I have. It's only the game/program I'm running, straight from the disc (Game of the Year edition) with the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles add-ons. The directory is in C:\Program Files(x86) instead of the regular C:\Program Files. I was never able to get the game to start, it would turn the screen black and then the error message would pop up.

Do you have dual displays? Have you tried the OblivionLauncher application as opposed to Oblivion.exe? You have all the latest drivers? Maybe try installing in C:\Games\Oblivion directory? Perhaps disable UAC?

I do have 2 display cables on my monitor and both are hooked up to my computer. Starting from the OblivionLauncher is giving me the same error. I have the latest graphics drviers, but I don't know which other ones I need to update. I will try reinstalling it like that, I'm not sure why its in that weird location. What is UAC?

Don't worry about the UAC. You should never actually need to disable it, regardless of what anyone says. Nor should you disable it unless you are willing to take on 100% of the fault if something ever goes wrong in the history of your computer.

Just install the game anywhere BUT the Program Files folder. As suggested, make a folder called Games, or anything, and install it there (And all your future games as well).

Could be this. Make sure you don't have another monitor hooked up and that the display cables you have hooked up correspond to just your monitor.

They're both for my one monitor and they're only connected to it.

I tried reinstalling it in a different folder, without the add-ons, and it still did not work. I did a scan of my computer and all my drivers are up-to-date, so no help there.

Alright! I got it fixed and running now! I guess the problem was when it was trying to launch, the screen resolution was only at 640x800, when my computer uses 1920x1080. I accidentally figured that out when I was going through the options and data files. Thank you kindly everyone for your wonderful help!
