Blocking with sword and magic combo?

I think balance is the excuse to make up for lack of buttons for console users. I mean, there's only so many things that can be mapped onto it. Right?

what is this i dont even....

2 very simple statements followed by one of the most basic questions in English.

But yeah, we're all going to have different views on this, so it's pointless to try and shove ( ) each others ideas into one another. When it comes down to it, what we think or say now doesn't matter. They've made their choice, it's set, it's done. We will make do with it, and I'm sure we will enjoy it regardless. Maybe they'll take this feedback and improve future games, who knows. But for now, I think we should wait and see how it handles. Who knows, maybe we'll be genuinely surprised. :disguise:

Nice to see close mindedness sees past reason or logic. Or, basic understanding, even. :sadvaultboy:

I don't own a PC of my own. The one I'm using has a whopping RAM of 512mb. So, the only thing I play on this is Daggerfall, lol. I play on the Xbox 360. It's what I will be getting my copy of Skyrim on. It certainly doesn't keep me from seeing the point of view others don't want to take, because they're too worried about their reputation or how they will be perceived by others. I can see this, as a lot of people are quick to assume something about one being, when they don't want to grasp what it is they're saying, or from what point of view they could be saying it in. Life goes on, though. Now, I must ask you to claim your baggage at Hangar 12. I will have your luggage assorted, so you may come and pick it up when you desire. Remember! Tidiness is our main focus on giving you the best and most clean experience ever! Be sure to visit us again, at your friendly airport: Sacky Bones National Airport. Have a good day. :disguise:

guy, i know how hot is the Dual wielding topic is, but can we at least divert this thread to Magic+weapon hot topic?

i think it's not less weird and not less artificial to disallow blocking from the M+W combo. if i have a fire spell on my left hand and a sword in my right, lets imagin bethesda think i need two hands holding a weapon to block, is it really that hard for my character to turn off my magic in the left hand so it can temporarily hold my sword with both hands and block?!

yeah. balance. i know. i also agree.
but in the M+W combo the disadvantage to empty hand+weapon should be that empty hand+weapon should allow more damage done with the sword since the character can thrust it with both hands and have more power, while M+W combo the attack is done with one hand so it's not as damaging.

same with dual wield - it should have block but every thrust does less damage since in real life it's harder to dual wield 2 heavy weapons than one, but it's faster.

They could still balance it and give dual-wielding a way to block. Just make it so that:
when dual-wielding, the block isn't very effective
when using a 2H weapon, the block is quite effective
when using a shield, the block is very effective

That way, if you're dealing more damage, your block isn't as good.

The PC actually doesn't have any more workable controls for actions as a Console if you think about it. Blocking could be relegated to an awkward keystroke of course, but then it sort of defies the point. If you look at what's truly intuitive, you have to discount everything that isn't within an immediate striking distance of the Index, Middle finger and thumb. Surprisingly few people actually can control the last two completely independent of any other motion.

Also, what's up with people saying "omg we cant dodge now", which is utter BS, as we can see even lolTodd dodge a few strikes in the demo, and he svcks!

GASP!!! :shocking: Logic in a console vs pc post!!! The world is ending!!!

The are designing Skyrim around a basic mouse, two button with a scrollbar, not some crazy $300 gaming mouse with 50 buttons. The left click handles one hand (most likely the right), while the right click handles the other hand (most likely the left) and blocking. Using a two-handed weapon the right click can be used for a block, using a one handed weapon with an open hand allows you to block. Using a weapon in one hand and something in the other hand doesn't allow you to block. It's not some grand conspiracy to screw over PC users because the game is also on a console. snip

Can we block with a magical shield? Would be nice for my mage in tougher situations, assuming blowing them up in the 1st place isn't a better plan.

That you can't block while dual-wielding is just an inherent part of the game, in the same way as (for example) there are no spears

While, in your own ideal world, you might want those (and other) aspects added to the game, they aren't. The game is what it is, and if you don't like not being able to block, don't use dual wielding - I can't understand why that's such an issue?

We could all look at games and, having played them, fine tune aspects which we'd prefer, but that's not what's going on here. Bethesda made the game - it's their game - and we are privileged enough to be able to enjoy the fruits of their hard labour (the quid pro quo being we pay them a small fee for the right to play their game).

There is no blocking while dual-wielding. Nor is there while holding a sword and a spell. End of.

Had there been, you'd only end with a bunch of people complaining at how over powered dual wielding was following release. I guess what Bethesda are trying to create is a world where there a re a massive number of potential characters and classes. We can only assume that is the reason why they've tried to achieve 'balance'.

You can believe it's because "consoles" (those evil things, how dare they interrupt the fun PC players are having - PC players have been there from the start and other gamers have NO RIGHT to step on their turf) are restricting game play if you like, but you know what - it won't make a blind bit of difference.

It's like my girlfriend - she's not without her faults, but all in all she's amazing and I'm lucky to have her.

Accept the game for what it is and enjoy it. Letting yoursefl get so ridiculously annoyed about one small facet of the game just doesn't make sense

The lack of block for dual wielders has nothing to do with the console control, if they really wanted to Bethesda could have found a way to implement it, and was simply a design choice by them. Now, I'm not saying that it was a particularly good design choice, but it is what it is and there isn't anything we can do about it now. Contrary to popular belief, forum whining is not going to force the devs to sit up, take notice, and implement features the way the fans think they should... However, I suppose it could result in M'aiq taking a clumsy verbal swing in your general direction.

Blocking available with:
Off hand Shield
Single one handed weapon (no off hand)
2 handed weapon (including bows i believe, please correct me if i'm wrong)

Blocking unavailable with:

I don't see where you're coming from with that.

Level scaling is a forced mechanic that ruined Oblivion (for the most part), while being able to block is completely optional and up to the player. Level scaling wasn't even part of your character's playstyle (though it did dictate it to a degree), nor was it something that even helped the game. Instead, it brought out the OCD in people who had to have the best possible items in game and forced them to play the game in a way that wasn't enjoyable at all.

It didn't force but it did promote a particular play style. And thats the same point as made here, having one combat style better/more effective than the others promotes a particular play style.

You're looking at it wrong. If all of my abilities and weapons are on par with my opponents', I'm going to win simply because of who and what I am. I can (and will) use Dragon Shouts. I can (and most likely will) have better gear than my opponents. I can (and will) supplement my main "class" with any skill I'd like. Just because every single weapon is now on an equal playing field doesn't mean you and your opponents are.

On the other hand, if you're a warrior using a sword and shield and you're ambushed by a bunch of bandits wielding massive battle axes or dual swords, you're at a slight disadvantage and you will need strategy and tact in order to win (or opposable thumbs and a difficulty slider). Sure, it could be exactly the opposite -- you're dual wielding battle axes and they have daggers, swords and shields -- but that's all part of how you choose to play. If you and I are playing the game in the same room with different weapons and skills, we both shouldn't be progressing through the game at the same rate or ease. It should be different, depending on our playstyles and choices.

I don't agree, everything else being totally equal the choice of 1h, 2h or dual wield should make the gameplay different, but not harder or easier. That is what they are doing. It's now impossible to fight in the same way using sword and shield or two swords. This is great since you now have to choose a style of combat along with kit choices!

I don't know how you'd stop a sword/axe/mace swing with nothing but ephemeral magical energy swirling around your hand... maybe that is what the "Shield" spell is for. But it blocks some of the damage for you, so even then...

It's for BALANCE. Why should you get to do twice as much damage and still be able to block?

It's a singleplayer game, balance doesn't mean anything. You just use whatever you think is the most fun and cool to use. Besides, isn't Skyrim meant to be more or less an alternate reality? What kind of an idiot would go into melee combat without any means to defend himself... It makes perfect sense that you should be able to parry/deflect incoming attacks while dual wielding. Some attacks can't be deflected ofcourse and must be dodged (like attacks from dragons/giants). A shield on the other hand can defend against a lot more attacks.

Beth have said that they want people to be able to play this game without mods, but I can easily see a "blocking mod" becoming popular quickly ;)
