Low FPS? Why?

Post » Wed Sep 07, 2011 8:14 am

I just bought a new laptop.
The ASUS K53TA, the GPU seems nice and i'm trying to run Oblivion on ultra high with some mods on fullscreen..
That gives me 15-20 FPS while walking around.
Why is that?

Here is my DxDiag..

Update:
Here is some input from CYRI (CanYouRunIt):

It doesn't just seem to meet the requirements.. but exceeds them amazingly well.
I don't get it. ;_;

I think you're expecting too much trying to run Ultra High with an integrated graphical chipset that's actually integrated on the CPU. This chipset also doesn't even have its own dedicated memory, meaning it has to leach off your system RAM...this could definitely affect performance in those more stressful areas of the game.

That's a lot of work for one chip to do....

The chipset seems to have 1GB dedicated memory and 2GB shared memory ;_;

I guess Qarl's Texture affects FPS by a lot ;_;

Yesterday afternoon I had 50-80 FPS without Qarl's nice looking textures.

Processor: AMD A6-3400M APU with Radeon? HD Graphics, ~1.4GHz

Page File: 2135MB used, 4984MB available

Onboard Sound.

6500M video.

Processor is below recommended. (below minimum for that matter.) Lots of crap loading in the background, (typical of laptops) Processor has to deal with all sound, which is a performance killer even with a good processor. video card isn't really designed for running high demand games.

That said, 15-20 is still playable. You could probably pick up a few FPS by disabling music in the oblivion.ini. (located in My Games\Oblivion) Find the setting:

bmusicenabled=1

Change the one to a zero. No music, but, bit better performance.

Kill some of the background processes. Especially virus/malware scanners. You can use a utility like game booster, or, use a tweak guide for your O/S, and kill of the stuff that you don't need. (http://www.blackviper.com/ has a great site for that.)

I don't believe 1.4GHz is the real speed of the processor.

.. I really thought i would actually be able to play Oblivion nicely with this laptop ._.

Thanks for the info though.

Edit: Thing is.. it says on my laptop that it is using a ATI Radeon HD 6720G2 1GB.
As well as 6500M and 6600M.

Not all PCs have the correct setup in their BIOSes to enable overclocking. You will be much better served by going straight to the source. ATI / AMD has supported their "RAGE" forums for a dozen years, and there are many knowledgeable folks to make suggestions there. If there is any automatic boost to the APU's core speed, they'll know. But if 1.4 is all it's got, that's not enough, no matter if it had a dozen cores. Asus also has its own forums, however, I don't think that they have as good of a pool of experience built up yet.

If you do have both a dedicated GPU of some sort, as well as the one built into the APU, it may have gotten itself switched off somehow; ask about that when you get to the Rage3D forums.

I believe that processor does the "turbo" thing, overclocking itself up to something like 2.3 GHz. I'd be really leery of trying to get higher performance out of a laptop than it was engineered for, given the potential heat issues, but I'm certainly no expert on the subject..
