Cinematic Moments in Skyrim.

Post » Fri Sep 09, 2011 6:54 pm

I really love seeing small cinematic cut scenes in a game because they are an awesome tool that will quickly immerse a player if used correctly. Here's an example, in oblivion you would just start the game hanging out in your cell, but wouldn't it be awesome if the game started out as you are being dragged to your cell (in first person PoV) and then thrown in there as the guards lock the door. I'm probably just rambling here but I think Bethesda can use that kind of stuff to immerse you in the world and the quests. Thoughts?

Just for clarification i'm talking about those.... Oh god i'm scared to use this word.... CoD moments where it feels like everything is happening in real time. Turn this into a call of duty discussion and i'll asked to have this thread locked.

Maybe at the beginning of the game but not during the quests I reckon. Anything that takes away total control may break the immersiveness for some I think

I hate cutscenes. Important people die in them, and I am forced to watch.

Way to technological considering the many appearances and choices a player can be

No. Elder Scrolls have always been in real-time. Except for the opening cut-scene.

Fallout 3 had a couple of these things, they're alright but they shouldn't be overused.

I kind of agree, but only in situations where you wouldn't have control anyway. (i.e. Fallout 3 Mothership Zeta, in the trash area, one of the trash lifts breaks and you fall and break your leg.) It isn't a full blown cutscene, but that's what I want to see more of.

I agree, i'd want them to be very rare and used correctly instead of every 2 minutes like certain other games that I dare not speak of again...

I think that Dunmer in the Oblivion intro did a good job adding to the prisoner-feeling. Maybe they could have opened the game with the Player seeing Valen Dreth tossed into prison. He notices you, starts his ramble, while the guard tells him to shut-up as Uriel Septim and the Blades come down to your cell.

That guard should have been the speechless one stuttering, saying "I... I don't know, must have been some sort of mix-up at the watch!" I would have liked that.

Morrowind had a cinematic, more of a hellish nightmare until Jiub starts talking. "Why are you shaking? Are you okay? Wake up."

I do wonder how Skyrim will open up now.

The Mothership Zeta subtle cutscene when you break your leg is a perfect example of the immersive cutscenes that I love.

Cutscenes can be great to move a story forward or to explain some events
but should not be over used. We don't want to feel like we are watching a
movie with a little interaction every now and then. It should be the other way
around.

LOL. Never heard it put that way before. Makes it more like torture then, doesn't it.

There are games that do cut scenes using your actual character, but those are rendered in game by the game engine. Of course in that case I guess it would make it more like machina than a true cinematic.

My case in point is Halo Reach.

I don't like cut scenes at all. I feel that they actually interfere with my immersion. If there were 0 cut scenes in Skyrim i would be one happy panda.

To be honest, I am not a fan of cutscenes unless it has key plot info

I always throw a few key, well placed, well done cutscenes into each of my quest mods. So, that said, if there aren't any in Skyrim, and you have it for PC, you will certainly get them in all quest mods that I make. :D

I'd like cutscenes for the moments when some characters are speaking of past history. Kinda like "Thief" where you see drawing or murals (the one in the trailer is a good example) with a voiceover in the background. Those kind of cutscenes would be awesome without "taking freedom away from you".

Or like Fallout 3/NV with the slides

I never played that one, but I thought the cinematics in MGS4 were done really well.

I really enjoyed Metal Gear Solid 4 and how they approached cinematics; considering it was the final game for Solid Snake it was a really good send off and quite emotional at times. However, I understand how some people, who are maybe not as big a fan of the series as myself, can find it tedious to watch so many cinematics of that length.
