A prettier sandbox at what cost?

Brief background. Male, old, played TES I – IV and Battlespire. Thousands of hours in total.

To me I see that there is a juggling act going on between developing the character and making a prettier sandbox to play in. Which is more important to you?

I like more normal creatures, more voice actors, better physics and graphics, etc. and this does add to the immersion into the world. I also like detailed character creation and development.

We are already aware that some things have been taken out of the game that are RPG elements. We also already know that some things have been added to the game world itself. I know you can’t have everything, but where should the balance be?

Better World > Character Development?
Character Development > Better World?

Of the last three games MW was a lot more CD>BW than OB. Skyrim seems to be pushing this even farther. Do you think Skyrim will take this too far and things will be out of balance or is this the direction Bethesda needs to continue to go? Thoughts?

I always loved the massive world in oblivion, i loved finding those caves and shizzam that got me wondering in one for almost 30 mins each. I'd like a good character too but ya know, the world and exploration is my biggest love :disguise:

I think the world is going to be better and the character system will be more logical and have more detail.

One thing I've come to realize while playing TES is that initially I care about character development and I like to spend a little extra time creating one for RPing purposes, but once I am able to do what I want in the world then exploration and adventuring is my top priority. Frankly I didn't like the style of the characters so much in previous titles, they improved a bit in FO3, but for Skyrim with more rich environments and new character designs IMO there will be a good balance between character development and the world.

In short, I just get immersed in the world so characters weren't that important. In FO3 it was more important to me becuase I could see my character more due to VATS. This time around I will focus more on both because of the improvements they've made.

Contemporary BGS audience does not like complexity. So this is the direction. It's a matter of preference, really.

I'm a little confused at what the debate hear is actually about? Is it another 'dumbed down' topic?

character devolpment is very important (much more so than the world imo), but without a world we cant have a character, we need a bit of balance

I'm here for the world. Character stats to me are just the quantification of how successful my character's attempts to interact with that world will be. Don't get me wrong, i have nothing against complexity, why would I have the Rolemaster rule books if I did? But P'n'P can't draw pretty pictures, computers can, so I can't see the harm. At least Beth aren't skimping on content to give us the view.

Oops, I voted without thinking. Hands down the one thing you want most are relevant and interesting quests. That, above all else, makes Elder Scrolls, Elder Scrolls.
