Am I wasting my time?

With Dogmeat, I see there is 2 options to say "Good boy" and "Bad dog!" to him.

Also noticed that sometimes he likes to stand behind me and randomly bark at the wall or a file cabinet. Pretty annoying. So I wondered if it would do anything if I scolded him for the random barking. Soon enough, I started doing it every time he would do it. Then I got thinking some more, and started to praise him after he fought an enemy with me and killed someone.

I'm pretty certain at this point that I am a nut, and those talk options have a totally different purpose (or none at all).

Am I wasting my time trying to train that bastard?

It's lonely out there in the wastelands isn't it? :P

It's easy to check and it's confirmed that the dialogues have no effect whatsoever.
To scripts are assigned to those particular dialogues, making them flavor-only.

This^ It was confirmed a while ago that those dialogue options have no real effect on dogmeat.

A real long time ago. I could check it myself in less than a minute.

Yeah, I remember reading it on the wiki over a year ago. To the OP, try searching the internet or the fallout wiki before posting a question here, because as stated by Pistolero it takes less than a minute to find the answer.

So I am a nut. That's okay.

And I did look around for awhile for the answer before asking people who would know here. Looks like I was wasting my time typiing in "Fallout 3 Dogmeat good boy" and "Fallout 3 Dogmeat bad dog" kind of stuff, when I should've just used the magic word "dialogue".

If you are on pc check out these two Dogmeat mods. The Dogmeat Leather Armor adds a few more options for Dogmeat including setting his home anywhere, not just Vault 101. I like the Husky mod because it makes Dogmeat unique in the wasteland and I can keep track of him better.

@Tycho the wanderer: I thought this was one place anyone could come to ask valid questions without being reprimanded. It is not like this question was spam or anything like that.

I wasn't saying that the question was spam or anything, just that it would be quicker and easier if he were to check the fallout wiki. I'm sorry if I came off as angry, there have just been a lot questions posted that are more easily answered by the vault or the internet.

Try searching for the Fallout wiki instead, it is called "The Vault"
To find the answer to your question type in "Dogmeat" to the wiki's search box and then read through the article about fallout 3's dogmeat. I believe the answer to your original question is somewhere in that article. The wiki can be very helpful for answering questions about NPCs, weapon locations, quest help etc. That's not to say that you can't come here for these questions, but the wiki may be faster and more detailed in it's description of things such as quest walkthroughs or the location of a rare item.
