Depends entirely on your current role-play style, and what you look for in a weapon.

In terms of damage yes, but it can't be the best weapon if it isn't practical in most situations.

I've always been quite fond of the sniper rifle, in spite of the scarcity of ammo, its tendency to wear out and its slight lack of hitting power. Which is where modding comes in handy!

Fallout 3: Man Opener.
Fallout New Vegas: Holorifle I guess.

Man Opener cause of the ridiculous damage you get from Point Lookouts perks and Holorifle cause of it's damage, speed and 1:1 ammo usage.

I like the anti-material rifle. the kick back svcks though cause you have to wait till it gets back on target

Hmm for Fallout 3: Perforator, just a favorite, well rounded weapon of mine. Fallout NV: Light in Shining Darkness, good damage, its a pistol and its just cool!

Xuanlong Assualt Rifle. Pretty accurate, ammo is everywhere, and the DMG/Attack is rediculous. Either that or Backwater Rifle, whose ammo is even more common, it's more accuarte, and its only downside is that it's not fully automatic. Or the combat shotgun.

Xuanlong Assault Rifle for Fallout 3 and the Assault Carbine for New Vegas. Both of the guns have good damage, ammo is easy to find and they are both somewhat accurate.

Experimental MIRV for overkill.
Sniper rifles and its variants for over all game play. I'm a sniper character.

Has anyone even used Man-Opener with Point Lookouts perks here?
It kills reavers, overlords and albions in mere seconds.
It doesn't require ammo, it doesn't require any aiming, all it requires is going close-combat, and with the stimpakpalooza that Fallout 3 is it isn't as much as a negatie as it might seem like.
Xuanlong still requires aiming, ammo and reloading not to mention it has a spread, and MIRV requires too many nukes to be useful, after firing 3 times you'll run out of nukes.
Oh and Man-Opener cripples enemies with ease so they become stunned when you attack them too.

No really, go try it, now.
It's the best weapon thanks to Point Lookouts official content.

The Man-Opener is really good, I'm just not really into melee.

I'm partial to the heavey incinerator myself.

But overall, I'd have to say the laser and plasma rifles are the most usefull throughout all the games.
