Chapter 1: Awakening

Jack drew a quick breath as life suddenly came back to him. He had no reckoning of who he was, and where he was. He struggled in his steel coffin. A soft humming noise slowly drew into an unbearable cacophony. He could barely move, and he began to panic as he felt his metallic prison close in on him. Wherever he was, it was cold, but began to cool. His vision slowly came back to him and he was adjusting to the low light, when a wave of pain came over him. He felt his nose and mouth, there were tubes running into them. In fear he began to draw out the long tubes from his nostrils, and worked the tube out of his mouth as he gagged violently. With all his strength his weak body could muster he began to push outwards onto the wall of his cold pod. Suddenly a loud ‘pop’ and an accompanying soft hiss of cool air notified Jack of his success. He gripped the edge of the door and swung it open blindly. He found himself in a small room overgrown with plant matter. The hard cement floor was cracked and small weeds struggled to survive on the tiniest light that penetrated through a small hole in the ceiling. Jack rolled onto the ground weakly as he struggled to stand up. The room was only maybe about twenty-five feet long and wide, and had a low ceiling coated with a thin veil of vines spreading about like veins. They were strange and pulsated and faintly glowed a queer green. Jack hobbled over to a locker, and found inside a neatly packed blue and yellow jumpsuit mysteriously labeled ‘37’. Suddenly a burst of memory came back to him. He remembered a request long ago from Vault-Tec. He was selected for life in a vault numbered 37, and upon entering it he only found a small room containing a locker and a strange coffin like pod. Pieces began to fall into place…
