MORROWIND THE MOVIE

Post » Tue Sep 13, 2011 10:02 pm

My name is James Wards.

I am a 3D animation graduate and have recently purchased my own independant motion capture system.

I am eager to begin working on a project to showcase my motion capture and feature film capabilities, and I want to begin with Morrowind.

Morrowind was the reason I decided to pursue 3D animation as a career choice, as I had an incredible passion in following video game development as a result from spending countless hours modding Morrowind when I was a teenager.

I feel as though I have a lot to contribute to the community showcasing the sheer vastness, imaginiation, story telling and lore associated with Morrowind, and demonstrate it's incredible wealth of immersion by showcasing it to a variety of audiences, not just gaming enthusiasts.

The main question I have for you all today, is this, will Morrowind be released on some sort of Shareware lisence, similar to what Daggerfall was during the release of Oblivion, when Skyrim is released? If so, what will me creative freedoms be as a result? If it will not be released as free software, could you explain to me the options I have then? Also, am I able to use popular mods created by Morrowind users as long as I contact them and give them credit?

I look forward to your responses.

Also, If you feel as though you have anything to contribute towards the project, do not hesitate to ask.

First thing first. If you plan on selling anything using Morrowind's, or a mod's content, you can kiss that idea out the door.

No one can say if Morrowind will be released like Daggerfall was. Though I would bet it wont be.

You would need to ask the mod authors for permission. We cant speak for them. But again, no commercial use is going to be an obvious limitation of whatever you use.

Well, if you were planning on using whatever content you might create on the basis of Morrowind assets for anything other than a mod or the odd youtube movie you would obviously need to ask Bethesda for formal permission.

Okay, I have actually had this sort of discussion with GStaff before.

If Morrowind was to ever be released free like Arena/Daggerfall, which seem highly unlikely for a very long time (think ES6 or even ES7), it would not be under a free lisense.

For example, I wanted to use the texture from ES: Arena in an Oblivion mod, upon talking to GStaff I was told that it wasnt allowed.

I dont think you'll ever have free lisense to use the Morrowind assests.

I have no intention of commercializing it in any way. I just want my passion alone for Morrowind to fuel my endeavour to complete a feature movie to use as a part of my animation portfolio, for the likes of showcasing my motion capture capabilities. Is this not allowed?

I would also like to add, my dream has always been to work for Bethesda, so I would likely only show them my Morrowind film...

You can use your own copy of Morrowind to make the movie. That's totally legal. Uploading said video to YouTube is also pretty fair game, especially if you note in the description that the game contents are created and owned by Bethesda.
