Marksman Hints?

Post » Tue Sep 13, 2011 4:26 pm

Any hints how to be a better marksman?

My nice Altmer fella can kill deadly when outdoors, but I found dungeon raining when wielding a bow (due limited range of fire in caves) difficult.
to that end morrowind had X-bows, but oblivion does not have..
While my aim is killer (I can walk backwards, jump behind a rock fire in mid-air and hit them right between the eyes) this only works if I have space to MOVE

Any suggestions for marksman dungeon raiding, or is it just not doable and should I stick to my mace+firespells for dungeons?

Insider Dungeons, you always need to be aware of your surroundings. Caves and Forts tend to be a little fickle sometimes as the majority of the time there are no obstacles that can be beneficial for you. All you can really do is predict enemy movement and fight accordingly.
With Ruins however, there are quite often ledges that you can hop onto and thus allowing you to rain down upon the mob that's after you. Most of the time, the AI can't work out it can't reach you, so it'll be easy pickings, although it's not as fun as moving around.

I'm not sure what else to say really. Trying to fire a bow effectively inside somewhere is like trying to chop wood insider a closet. You'll get the job done, but it'll either take a while, or it'll be a messy job.
Good Hunting!

Given your outdoor success, I assume you're all over the wonders of sneak + poison and take that as a given.

My mystic archer augments with detect life and mind control spells inside dungeons to enhance both her safety and manipulate her foes. That helps to ensure effective bow shots.

It can be as simple as taking a fairly short range poisoned sneak shot, then chasing the arrow with a demoralize spell so your target runs away to die of poison.

For multiple foes, command them to thin their own ranks until the group is down to convenient sniping size.

My character learned to shoot fast when inside dungeons. Also when enemies close into melee range she has two options. She either switches to a sword or puts some distance between herself and the foe(s) and shoots more.

My character doesn't deal the damage that Acadian's does so that's how she does it.

Always incorporate sneak! That is literally the best way to be good at Marksman. Other than that, it takes practice to get used to the arrow drop distance. Try to get enchanted arrows or enchant them yourself, this helps a ton.

Btw, if you want to learn from a pro, check out my Oblivion Sniping Video :D

As Rigor said, do not underestimate sneak. With a high enough Sneak (50+), and a good dark spot to hide in, you can shoot people and stay hidden. Just do not move after you shoot. That is actually one of the bonuses to archery indoors, that you cannot get outside.

Another thing that can be done is to shoot, then quickly change roost. So even if the guy tries to find you by the source of the arrow, he'll be looking in the wrong spot.

Well, I play with FCOM and other mods, so maybe it affects things. And I guess I've just played too much Splinter Cell :P
