Raw Materials (Mining)

Post » Wed Sep 14, 2011 8:28 pm

Yeah, I'm mentally still trying to sort out how 'styles' and 'materials' are going to mesh, and the perk descriptions don't explain things very well. In Daggerfall orcish was a green metal, but later sources describe it as being steel forged using orcish techniques. Dwarven stuff seems to be made of some sort of specific material that isn't likely to be stuff we're familar with on earth, so that's why I was guessing orichalcum.

I could see gold being used on ebony armor for trim. Bronze, not so much; its not all that attractive, and it's brittle and heavy.

Don't hold me to this, but I think I remember reading that Dwarven was iron that was specially processed.

Glass cannot be an ore as it isn't an ore in real life, nor can bronze as it is an alloy (a mixture of copper and silver) so you can cancel them
two out.

Glass 'ore' is in the TES universe
you can mine it in morrowind from glass deposits in caves and mines just like ebony deposits
it isnt like window glass or champaign glass or that, but they call it Glass because of its smoothness and sheen that makes it look like common glass
thats like saying ebony cant be an ore because its not on earth
its a fantasy game... that gives you a hint that there will be made-up elements and materials in it

what about Dragon? ... that's a material now ... I suspect it will be minable somehow? Dragon swords! It's like RS all over again

Mineable? Don't you mean you take it from their corpses?

never Played Morrowind did ya :P

Glass In Elder Scrolls isn't Terrestrial Glass. or else it would blow as armor or as a good weapon.. not to mention eating glass in Morrowind isnt very Bad for you.. where as In Real life Eating glass is akin to Drinking Draino

2)silver
3)iron

5)bronze
6)glass (probably)

help me complete This please what could it be?

Cobalt is also generally pretty toxic in significant amounts, and it causes a bad contact dermatitis.

IRL ebony is a decorative black wood from Africa, I wish they'd made up a mineral name like stygium or tenebricite instead.

If we find a 'dragon graveyard' we can totally go mining for bones.

Its very possible that we're interpreting 'ores' too literally and that they really meant gatherable smithing materials of any kind. IIRC the original article that mentioned 13 'ores' wasn't written in english.

Care to explain those "Glass Mines" in Morrowind then?

Glass is made from sand, which is made from a mixture or calcium and silicon I believe. Still doubtful ore possibilities. However, Bronze is made from copper and tin, not copper and silver.

Gold and silver are probably going to be in. Since an article mention you can craft jewelry, and most of it are made from gold or silver.

Before Uranium was found to have power capabilities, it was used in a lot of conventional items, mostly as glazes, paints, and additives to brick and mortar foundations (hence forth the current Radon problems were seeing in old brick buildings, kinda like Absbestos).

Uranium is technically a metal, and its is incredibly strong and durable, why do you think the military takes Uranium that has had its base isotope sudnificantly depleated from nuclear reactors to be used as a projectile in most Armor-Piercing Weapon systems its because its extremely hard.

Its hazardous to your health yes, but Madam Curey didnt figure that out until the last moment after discovering the Radium build up in processed uranium.

So don't knock something that we know as something in modern day, cause back in ancients and medival times, a lot of things we hold as conventional blunders and hazards were tools of the trade back in the good old days.

Heck believe it or not humanity has been playing with Absbestos for almost 4,000 years

Its not like a Civilization, Empire Earth, or Game where you have to work your way into a Modern day before you get access to certain materials, if it was found to be viable for weapons, construction, resistant material, or some kind of base, you can bet it was used even back in the dark ages, to the peliminary era of human history.

from UESP: "Glass weapons and armor are an ornate design: light and flexible, although very difficult to make and expensive. Glass armor is a lightweight armor created using rare metals studded with volcanic glass. The result is stronger than steel due to its ability to absorb and distribute shocks very well. Glass armor not only surpasses other light armor in strength, but is also superior to most medium armor (with the exception of a few Artifacts and some new medium armor added by the two expansions). The armor is favored by the Buoyant Armigers, and one of the only places it can be found for sale is at their stronghold in Ghostgate.
Similarly, glass weapons are created using rare metals and volcanic glass to produce blades of virtually unparalleled sharpness."
Also, ebony in our world is wood. In Tamriel it's a ground sort found near volcanoes (basically a special version of Glass).

this

and don't forget

There is a lot of misconceptions with Copper Alloys so its not uncommon what some people think the base materials that make the alloy are
Seems the two most common copper alloy errors are with Brass and Bronze.

Bronze = Copper + Tin
Brass = Copepr + Zinc

But there are generally only two others varients of Bronze:
Aluminum Bronze & Silicon Bronze

Silver + Copper dont bond properly at all, their a non-conforming alloy bond, if anything that make the bond weaker, not stronger.
Silver and Nickle work together though, that may be the confusion.

PWNED :trophy:

nice post very informative you just pwned some people with uber knowledge.

I don't think you'd want to handle uranium, let alone forge yourself a suit of armor or sword with it.

Well, those who've mentioned Uranium...perhaps you need to mine it to get enough of it to have enough material achieve critical mass...then you use Dwermer tech to outfit it into a bomb, and then nuke Alduin when he shows up. ;)

Actually, it's because of uranium's pyrophoric properties; essentially, it ignites really easily while flying through the air. Certain isotopes of uranium are even known for randomly igniting if left exposed to oxygen. In fact, one of the biggest dangers with old nuclear power designs is the possibility the uranium will ignite while inside the reactor, thus causing a uranium fire that is extremely difficult and dangerous to put out and even more dangerous not to.
