Is Summoning now "On Target"?

Post » Sat Sep 17, 2011 3:33 pm

Well...in the HD there is a scene where one of our friends on this forum describe as "A person floats out of a tomb and summons a large ice cube man to attack you" (That is, The Dragon Priest summon a Frost Atronach....) My point is....when he cast summon....It's like there are something coming out of his body and land on the ground before the Atronach appears.....Do you think this, and the fact that there're summoning staves, mean that summon are now On Target spell? Discuss.....

Weren't conjuration spells "self" ranged spells in Oblivion? Because I think "self" spells are still in Skyrim - see the Turn Undead spell in the videos, and presumably Bound Armour/Weapons (confirmed) won't be on target!

I think summoning will work the same as in Oblivion - cast on "self" and the summoned creature appears in an appropriate spot nearby.

Its probably scripted just for that boss, so he would summon out in the open instead of against the tomb.

On a related note, does anybody else prefer the way Frost Atronachs looked in Oblivion?
Not that the new model is bad, but they look kind of silly in my eyes, and I always liked the way Frost Atronachs looked the most out of the Atronachs in Oblivion.

Hopefully they are on target.

I would like to be able to set a main target for my summon when i summon him. I'm guessing he doesn't disappear when his target is dead if summons are target spells. I also doubt that if you miss the summon wont fail as a spell he just wont have a main target.
I could see this happening.

In the demo it's as if the target IS the floor and the Atronach came out where the projectile landed.....

I believe the Priest was dual-wielding spells, 1 was summon and the other was frost or something like that.

I kind of doubtful that it's 'on target', it seems more likely that anything summoned will just pop up a few steps away so that it's not overlapping with any existing characters or environment. It would be pretty sweet to summon 'on target' though, hang out on some rooftop and drop a dremora into a town or something.

It possibly works like the trap sigils, you look and place were you want it to be summoned.

Better situation.....Stand on the Throat of the World and drop your summon down to the ground...

I'd like it if they were on target, it could be annoying when fighting in cramped spaces that your summoned creature would appear in a bad location. If the creature appears where you aim, it would add a strategic element to summoning in certain situations. You can lure NPC's in dungeon traps, or perhaps even distract them by summoning a creature behind them, so they turn around and you can sneak behind their backs without noticing you, or backstab them, etc.

I think they are on target, I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere. So you can be a bit more tactical with your summoning, like summoning a creature in a room with enemies up ahead. :)

Maybe you could be in sneak and target the spell near the enemy and it summons near him that way you don't have to get involved.
Makes being a pacifist-mage more viable.

I assumed in past games that Summons were "on self" to let the minion know who's boss. They could have easily changed it though; the large ice cube man was pretty far away from the float away person.

That said, I love the ice golem's look. Very robot/golem-like, if only because of the lack of natural curves and a better resemblance to a chunk of glacier. Oblivion's was okay; though the rock-hard abs made me smile. Looking back on Morrowind, they had some sort of lederhosen-thing going on.

It doesn't look like its on target... But it looks like you can summon from distances near targets which looks AMAZING... Example: You are on a cliff and when you look down the cliff you notice a group of bandits... You conjure the spell which shoots out and lands on the ground near the bandits.. They don't know what conjured...

Eh, they look okay imo... but I do prefer OB's atronach. I just hope Flame Atronach's look much better though.
