New Tidbits on Story

Post » Sun Sep 18, 2011 7:00 am

Alright, if you watch some of the new Tokyo Gameshow videos (which I can't post, don't ask) you might find a revealing conversation the player has with Alvor the blacksmith in Riverwood. I'll highlight in red the dialogue options the player chose. Note that not all options are visible. Also, you can't hear Alvor's voice in this video and there are no subtitles for him so I'll only be reciting the Dovahkiin. After that, I'll give you an organized list of the small amount of facts this reveals. Everything has been put in a spoiler box for good reason. Read at your own risk.

Spoiler

Option One:
  • Hadavar told me you could help out.
  • Can I use your forge?
  • What can I tell you about Riverwood?
  • What do you think about the war?

Option Two:
  • He's a friend. He promised you could help.
  • He helped me escape from prison.

Option Three:
  • A dragon attacked Helgen and destroyed it. Hadavar and I escaped together.
  • Never mind.

Option Four:
  • It was a dragon. Hadavar will tell you the same thing.
  • The dragon flew off this way. You must have seen it.

After that, the conversation ends and a quest update appears at the top of the screen saying:

Completed: Talk to Alvor in Riverwood
Talk to the Jarl of Whiterun

Additional options after the MQ dialogue include:
  • Can you help me out?
  • How can I get to Whiterun from here?
  • What can you tell me about the Jarl?

Now here are the details I picked up from this:
  • A man named Hadavar gets you out of prison.
  • You both cross through a town called "Helgen" shortly after or towards the end of the tutorial that is razed by a dragon.
  • The dragon escapes and flies in the direction of Riverwood.
  • Hadavar instructs you to meet his friend, Alvor the Blacksmith.
  • Alvor gives you information on the Jarl of Whiterun. That's where the Main Quest continues.

As brought to you by Highly Delicious.

Didn't see that. Looks like I'm the only one who posted the entire conversation though.

If I were to make a guess I would say that "Helgen" is where the prison you escape from is located rather than a seperate location you pass through on your way to Riverwood.

Spoiler
I'm wondering why Hadavar sent us to Alvor? All Alvor does is tell us to go see the Jarl of Whiterun. That big castle in Whiterun is the likely destination. That also explains that mother telling her son that she saw a Dragon.

You can ask for directions to whiterun. Could this mean quest markers are not as needed as in oblivion?

I'm sure they're somehow in.

Some of my younger cousins that have played MW and OB (around age 13) strongly disliked MW's lack of markers. They thought it was difficult, and they'd often get stuck not knowing what to do.

not really related to the discussion with the blacksmith, but I just noticed from a TGS video that there will be charcoal.... wonder what its used for?

and it appears there are separate maps for inside dungeons that are more oblivion-esque instead of 3d.

Khajiit seem to have a different idle and running animation. Very subtle but they while they have oblivion style legs, they stand slightly hunched over (edit: just got to the part where he is talking to a nord... he is WAY hunched over). When they sprint it is not like what we have seen so far on the nord. The nord had a standing up, normal looking sprint animation. The Khajiit seems to run with his head forward and his arms slightly out. More feral looking. Tail is sort of stiff looking while walking (like oblivion) but when sprinting the tail is far out behind and waving back and forth like it should. Basically if you see a khajiit sprinting you in the game it will be more threatening visually than a human character.

these are low quality vids though... so dont take my info as fact straight away.

Oh lol, should have replied to this before. There is a good sized arrow pointing down on Alvor's head as he walks down the street in Riverwood. An even bigger arrow guides you right towards him on the compass. I'm afraid quest markers are more prevalent in Skyrim than in Oblivion.

You probably need it to fuel fires when you cook.

good point.

also I noticed the arrow too (eww) but Im pretty sure Pete Hines tweeted recently that you can turn quest markers off by deselecting active quest in the menu.

Is most of the above info already seen or should I make a new thread? I really like the way khajiit look when they move, much different than I thought they would.

I think it's just because he's holding a weapon. The only other time we've seen someone do that in 3rd person was Todd during the Quakecon demo so I can understand why you would think that. A lot of people hadn't got to see the video since Zenimax closes every one of them on YouTube over copyright. Beast animations were promised and I believed it too for a second until I looked over both instances.

good point.

Hopefully! That would be very nice. Giant arrows are one of the few things I've seen so far that would definitely ruin my immersion.

Well apparently I'm already relaying "old" information. Another member started a thread on this the other day, as linked near the top. Your call though.

Edit: Oh, about the Khajiit? ... I wouldn't myself lol. You'd probably just get the same replies as I gave.
