I suppose you can take inspiration from elsewhere. For the most part however, I like my characters to be original.

Most likely Saren Arterius (Mass Effect 1). He always struck me as a well-meaning but misguided patriot of his people, but Instead of hating humans my Argonian mage will hate Dunmer of course.
