Newbie Question regarding levels

Hi there -

This is such a newbie question I know, but I will ask it anyway :) (I tried searching but I could not see anything that related to this, so here goes)

Can I just practice skills out of combat to get skill increases? Like, just have my character swing her sword or shoot snowballs at a tree? Will that work? I know some skils go up almost passively, like athletics, (Maybe acrobatics? Though I seemed to get skill increases just from falling a little too far :P )

anyway, thanks for any responses :)

Iirc, casting Spells at tree will work, however swinging swords in thin air will not. I think weapons need to cause damage to get level ups.

In saying that, spamming one spell is probably a bad idea. It can make your character seriously underpowered and be the man at Destruction, but because that does not raise Endurance, your Health will be low and you'll be at a high level, your attacks will be less powerful than they should be and your protection won't be as great.
