Crossfire 6970 Temps

Post » Mon Sep 19, 2011 11:05 pm

Ok - so ive searched and searched. Cant really seem to find what others are getting on Crysis 2 with temps.

My specs:

MB:Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7
Proc:AMD Phenom II x6 1100T @3.3 ghz - not Overclocked
RAM:Corsair Dominator GT 12 Gbs @ 2000 mhz Triple Channel (clocked at 1600 9.9.9.24)
GFX: 2xMSI Lightning Radeon HD 6970s Crossfired
PSU: Ultra X4 Gold Rated Modular 1000 watt

Forget the rest as it doenst matter for this

Im running the game in DX11 at full settings and getting an average Id say of 80 FPS. Sometimes lower obvioulsy and sometimes in the 100's (this is with Vsync off)

My temps on my top GFX card is hitting 86-88C while my lower card is sitting in the 60's. They have 2 empty slots between them. I just got the game yesterday - so just wanted to see what others are getting.

Im asking as this is the highest they get on any game - of course, nothing else that I play atm is as demanding as this.

Thoughts!?

[...]Forget the rest as it doesnt matter for this Case matters, airflow is key.

That is high, though within tolerance, for that card. Unless you have rock'n'roll airflow and just didn't specify, try taking the side of your case off and checking temps again. If you get a big difference you have a cooling opportunity. Once you hit the max cooling for your airflow and room temp, component temps start to rise exponentially. Maybe C2 nudged it past that point?

(Also, with vsync off C2 will get cards very hot in the menus unless sys_maxFPS is used to cap the framerates...)

I noticed the jump with vsync off. Still it was in the high 70s low 80s before.

Sorry on iPhone ATM typing is stupid lol

My case is a coolermaster HAF mid tower. HAF is high air flow
Power is on bottom etc. I have 5 120m fans and a corsair liquid cooler h60 set up
As push pull so no real heat coming from there. The cards are next to
An out flow fan, I was thinking of changing direction. I'll open
The case and run it and see. With how big the damn cards are they take a huge
Amount of space. Mumbled to myself when installing them the other day
That heat was going to be an issue. I'll see what I can do

I might be barking up the wrong tree -- thats a great case. Still, reversing side fans can make a big difference! I use an outflow after experimentation, but your cards are laid out very differently (I have the MSI Cyclone design). Inflow may well be better.

Yeah - Im looking at it all now.

The case is open - and the first card ( the hot one) has PLENTY of space around it. It looks likes its sitting in air by itself due to the proc not having a heat sink - just the cooling plate from the liquid cooler.

The bottom card is much closer to the power and power cables. It has about 2 inches between its fans and the PSU. The top card has a good 3 inches or so from the bottom card.

I think Ill try top reverse the fans as the air around the cards is not really moving.

One other thing since I posted the intial is I reset my MSI Afterburner Fan controls and then re-made a new setting. I think the fan speed was going way to slow at the temps - like 30% for some reason.

Ill check again and get back.

Another update -

I think the issue was turning Vsync off.

With Vsync on im at 60 FPS (Monitor is 75hrtz so it has to down grade to 60 put it stays there)

With Vsync off - on the menu screen my FPS is over 800 but the card usage jumps as soon as I turn vsync off. It was going from like 10% on both cards to 80% on both cards or higher, and then new fan settings kicked in the instant those usages went up as they should.

On the Crytek and Nvidia screen FPS was over 4000 lololol - I know it doesnt matter but I thought it was funny.

Ill just leave the vsync on and see how it goes, 60FPS is supposed to be as fast as we can see anyway I guess.

Ill be back with more updates on Temps though for future people as I work this out.

All Im doing is getting ready for BF3......

Get some water on them :). My two cards were jammed close together and the top card was getting way hotter. 2 full cover blocks later and they are a nice low 40C's each.

Lol - I may at one point get a cooler for the cards, but the proc cooler that I have is stand alone, which means Ill have to get the massive top unit that looks like the towers in this game lololol.

Of course, the case that I have has the cut outs in the back for top mounted liquid cooling. Ill take a look at it.

In reply to my other posts, I just played the game for about another two hours, Central park was just lifted lol. The cards mainly stayed at 67-68C occasionally lower and higher but for short seconds....

It seems that chaning the vsync and my fan speeds on the cards helped. This is with the case closed so thats good. Ill try and change the mounted side fan and see if that improves as well.

PS - I havent played a single player game in a long time yet alone a single player FPS. They normally bore the **** out of me. This Single player campaign is actually pretty good besides the AI being total garbage lol. GFX with DX11 are amazing.
