Random character challenge

Post » Tue Sep 01, 2009 8:32 am

I like to post this topic once every year or two to break the monotony of this place and provide an interesting challenge and a fresh approach to character creation for new and old people alike.

The challenge is simple. It's based on the real life idea that the circumstances into which a person is born is completely beyond his or her control. So what if the Elder Scrolls was the same way? What if we let a random program take over for us, much like the forces of chance and natural selection, and choose our form?

http://www.random.org/ (I used a very basic program that only picked a random number. I rolled four times on a sheet of paper. I rolled for race, gender, class and birth sign.)

Gender obviously has two options, male and female.

http://uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Races Put them down on paper in any order you wish. The first randomly generated race is the one you play. That's the nature of the game.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Classes They're listed at the UESP. Default classes only. I know some of them svck. That's part of the nature of the game. It's a challenge.

And finally we have the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Birthsigns. 13 of them for whoever is keeping count.

All random. Literally roll your character.

Your objective is to either complete the main quest, to reach level 20 or to rise to the top position of any guild. Even if you have the worst conceivable build of all time like an Orc bard or something.

Why? Because it's fun, different and interesting.

I rolled a female Orc pilgrim born under the Mage and I'm having a blast. She's on level 2 and just doing some low level quests in Balmora.

Here's a random generator I remember someone posted a year or so back

http://www.oocities.com/southbeach/boardwalk/6693/morandlite.htm

OK, my first gen was a Female Dunmer Sorcerer, birthsign of Apprentice, but that's just too easy, I'd use something like that if I was gonna play hardcoe! So I'm cheating and re-rolling once in the hope I get something weirder....

... and I get a Male Khajiit Pilgrim born under the sign of the Atronach. Now that's more like it. :D

That's the kind of wacky, random character that you'd never purposely make on your own but which may turn out to be an incredibly fun challenge in its own right.

Like my little Orc pilgrim. I mean what's her back story? An Orc pilgrim? Unusual profession for the people of Malacath isn't it? Except she's a loyal Imperial Cultist, and Legioaire. Apparently she's a loyal Imperial supporter.

I haven't done the Imperial Cult quests for ages so I think I'll go for those too. Maybe Tribunal Temple too, why not, lol. The pilgrimages ought to be interesting with MCA and Creatures running. I'll fluff the character as some kind of new age Khajiit dabbler. I reckon the level 20 objective will be my goal.

Doing enough of those religious quests should level you up surprisingly quickly. A lot of people overlook or under appreciate those organizations but they have some tough quests and powerful loot.

I'm shooting for MQ hero. No less.

This was a good idea, I'm also having a blast. The Pilgrim is tricky to use and much more challenging than any of the solid fighter, stealth or wizard classes, or the good hybrids for that matter. The Pilgrim is kinda like a Healer and an Archer smooshed into one class.

Right now I'm level 3 (6/10 of the way to level 4). I've done three Imperial Cult lay healer quests and am now collecting alms for the poor. I've spent a lot of time travelling by foot and raising my combat skills against monsters and random bandits. I'm focussing on hand-to-hand and marksman, with a bit of short-blades throw in since it's easy to level up.

I need to find a home so I can store stuff. I think I'll squat in one of the Vivec apartments, or maybe rent a apartment there, I think I have a mod that adds that.

I started out switching back and forth between my bow and short sword but Orcs do much better in melee, despite short blade being a minor. I've been using it as my main attack, usually only fighting one enemy at a time with Berserk enabled, and then retreating to heal. It's a new way of playing for me. I've never had a character exactly like this one.

I'll give it a go. Maybe I'll actually bother with the main quest this way.

And the result is:
Male Breton Witchhunter, sign of the Lover

Not terribly strange. I've never played a Witchhunter, though. Lesse...Blunt weapons...LOL. Prepare to get maced! :lmao:

That's actually a pretty good character you rolled up there. The Magicka bonus from the Breton race will be handy. You'll have good starting Agility boost (+35 total) which makes your accuracy and dodging much better than if you just had base Breton Agility. When I used a Witchhunter I used to use the Conjuration spells Bound Longbow and Bound Mace a lot, you should get a lot of mileage out of those.

Yes. Use Bound Mace and Bound Bow a lot. I did with my Witch Hunter character once. I actually beat the MQ and several guilds with that build.
