Correct me if I'm wrong.

Until yesterday I had hardly a single concern with what I've seen from Skyrim, But while playing Oblivion I realized something.

In Oblivion you could wield a sword, a shield, AND a magic spell. In Skyrim you will have to chose between keeping your shield or your sword if you want to use magic in combat.

I'm not necessarily complaining. But I do think this could either make the game more fun, or less fun.

Discuss.

Its been forever since I played Oblivion. Can you cast an offensive spell and use a weapon / shield combo simultaneously?

Yup, you can hold a shield, weapon and use an offensive spell. Where the spell is coming from is the question.

It equals out everything, makes you make more choices. Instead of just a shield/sword/magic combo. You sacrifice one thing for another.

I like the skyrim way more. It present you with a choice isntead of being able to have so much power you must choose between more damage or more defense.

Hopefully being able to bring up that menu to switch loadouts should make this less of a problem. Looks like you can switch rather quickly, and it pauses the game while you're switching. Besides, even if it is a hassle switching in combat, that would just make you have to specialize more, which would probably help your character in the long run anyways.

IMO, Oblivion was broken in this regard, and shouldn't have had the ability. Skyrim corrects this. Good for Skyrim.

IMO this should add more challenge to the game and add incentive to be an pure class instead of a hybrid. in past TES games the best builds were always JOAT which are suppose to give up functionality for flexability an issue Beth is finally fixing.

People asked more choices that matter and tactics.

I never understood how you could cast a spell from your sword anyway...

If they make shields stronger and block more important then play styles will be more balanced. Yes, you won't be able to wield as many things at once. But now there's a reason not to use a shield.

While at first glance it seemed to provide much more fun, what it really resulted in Oblivion is the devs expecting you to do that triple combination no matter what. Hence playing anything other than a shield-wielding Spellsword was punished severely by the level-scaling arms race. With that one-size-fits-all loadout now out the window, there is finally room to rebalance the different playstyles so that they are all viable.

Yeah, I guess I was just looking at this as a downgrade in terms of raw power.

After reading what everyone's been saying I have a much better understanding of why they did this, And I'm actually looking forward to this more balanced combat system. :tes:

Doesn't he toggle quickly between weapon and spell or shield and spell rather instantly, without messing with favorites? One think I liked even outside the favorites was that the spells were listed under respective schools, hopefully making them quicker to find when not favored.

I'm not worried about this, and I agree, Skyrim approach feels more natural than Oblivion.
