Quests in skyrim... Finally as deep as bioware?

Post » Tue Sep 20, 2011 7:37 am

With Bioware's last RPG (Dragon age 2) a mediocre gamet do you think the Elder Scrolls are in prime position to take over the spot of best story RPG?

Also what kinds of limitations does an open world do to story in games?

I personally would love to see deeper quests in Skyrim. I am looking for multiple step quests and quests that have a twist to them. Have a quest that makes you really think about the decision you are making (ala bioware). I think most people know Bioware tell some of the best stories of any RPG developer and I hope they rebound with Mass Effect 3, etc. but what do you think the chances are Skyrim will start to develop more intriguing story development?

Maybe. Mass Effect might be better, but obviously Skyrim will beat the crap that was DA2's plot.

Bethesda already stated that Skyrim's quests are similar to Oblivion's, like - less branches, but more quests themselves.

I don't know about best ever. The Elder Scroll's hook has never been its story.

I thought they said the Main Quest would be linear, but the faction questlines would have branching story arcs.

In terms of storytelling, no. In terms of story, it might be better than DA2 but will never top the rest of BW's titles. I would love having deep stories and more cinematic gameplay but that's not really what TES is all about.

Depends on what game you are basing this depth...

if it is like DA2 depth then I may shoot at my head

Well the main quest will be linear due to lore.

Bioware Lionhead is the worst game developer to date. Fact.

They surely weren't linear as Oblivion's. There were hundreds of options which actually altered the whole game. I here I talk about the vanilla DA, as I didn't bother with the expansion or DA 2. The story was nice, but the game per se was very annoying.

Biowares latest games (ME2 and DA2) have both been really disappointing and bad (especially as rpgs) but their games before those were usually excellent. I doubt Bethesda ever reaches that level in story telling, characters or choices. They concentrate on other things and have never been quite good at any of those from what I've seen. Especially in Oblivion all those were mostly done really bad and lacked depth. Story and quests were boring and shallow, characters werent interesting and there were barely any choices in dialogue or quests.

Let's keep the focus on discussing Skyrim quests, rather than bashing Bioware.

Eh. Origins was good. DA2 was awful though. I think the quests might be deeper this time around though.

I don't think the main quest would beat a Bioware or Obsidian game, but as side quest goes, Bethesda is the best when it comes to optional stuff. They're great at having lots of good side quests and great exploration, something that Bioware and Obsidian can't do.

Dragon age 2 svcked sooo much i cant describe it, Origins was lot better, but yeah i would prefer deep quests instead of many but shallow.

Baldur's Gate?

Never played it, but I see your point. They USED to be good, I'm still a huge Neverwinter Nights II fan. But the whole Mass Effect series and Dragon Age series [Origins was okay, but not a really good game] were a complete waste of time, money, and programming.

Thank God, a voice of reason!

That games story was all too predictable.

Lionhead are a good developer they are just being lead by a moron *cough* Peter Molyneux *cough*; they have a good team there just not getting good enough things to work on because of a certain someone's love for rubbish apparently emotion evoking RPGs.

However I think Skyrim so far appears to have more branches then Oblivion but I doubt it would go any more in-depth and Bioware well, they just make a simple quest and coat it in dialogue calling it "story".

Given the choice I would prefer more quests over less quests with branching quest lines.

I just like having alot to do. In Fallout 3 there were alot less quests to do than in Oblivion and that was in part due to that Fallout had more branches for the quests whereas Oblivions quests were linear and more simple.

Bioware do this to a higher level than what was in Fallout but other RPG elements in ME were missing
