Poll: Combat Style Balance

Post » Tue Sep 20, 2011 11:31 am

Hi all, I've recently started a new Oblivion play-through and it seems as though fighting with melee weapons is the best, even when I attempt to make an archer character >.<, what did you think of the Oblivion combat system? did you think it was balanced? How does Skyrim seem different in this aspect? LESS THAN 2 MONTHS UNTIL THE RELEASE OOOOOOH YEEEEAAHHHH!!

Skyrim seems to have more distinct styles, although I'm unhappy about some decisions. :poke:

Oblivion's combat was adequate, and not balanced, due to spellmaking. With spellmaking out, better archery, and a few new melee features, combat looks to be better balanced than in Oblivion.

I have a feeling that pure mages will have be SLIGHTLY more powerful pure melees. But who knows.

Do you mean to say that spell-making made magic overpowered? because in Oblivion, one can enchant a melee weapon and/or a bow, so wouldn't you say that enchanting and spell making cancel each other out in terms of balance?

some changes annoy me(spellmaking was meh, depends on whether or not the new system will be better)
but overall, combat looks drastically better. and archery doesn't absolutely svck anymore(I hope)

No, they don't. spellmaking is drastically more powerful than enchanting because it has much higher limits on how powerful a spell can become, and how it can be used

I feel like pure archery will probably not be a viable option if what they're saying about arrows being limited but more powerful is true. I don't think it'll necessarily be less powerful but rather, unlike the other two, you won't be able to use it exclusively to kill everything.

I'm also assuming magic as usual will be the top of the hierarchy if we're looking @ purist builds due to it's versatility. However, I feel that in TES all builds should include some magic and that combining it with one or both of the others may well end up being more powerful and more interesting to play than any purist build.

oh defintely not, especially with slower backpedalling......i always find myself shhoting arrows while running backwards away from enemies xD....i hope arrows carry more pwer in Skyrim for the sake of the kind of character i want to play as : P

Magic has always been the most powerful, and it will continue to be so. It does everything the other two do and more. The only thing that flaws magicka use, is the wielder themself. If the spellcaster knows which spell to use and when to use it, he is far more dangerous than an idiot spamming fireballs at everything (...usually)

I just wish they would make magic more rare in the sense of how many people use it, and the dificulty of using it. There should be a random mage every thousand people and, a very dangerous sorcerer every several thousand. Much like what they are doing with Thu'um... Hmmm... I am going to change my vote and say that Thu'm is the most powerful combat style.
