For curiosity's sake, how do you know they're completely finished with game mechanics?
Todd said that once they're done with Alpha that means they're "feature locked" and they move to beta, which is strictly bug squashing and play testing.
Secretly sweat out some random mechanic that just...isn't...working and work 15 hour days to try and fix it before going gold. Not fix it and claim it's a surprise that it doesn't work on release day and release a fix that bugs something else. Then drink heavily. Then sleep.
Has it reached Code Freeze yet (that's when they stop adding more to the game code)? If so it's time for beta testing and bug-fixing...then it goes gold and it's about ready to mass-copy

That's it...getting close
They should be out of Alpha (feature locked) and in Beta. Far too late to not be in Beta yet.

Yeah, but clearly that doesn't mean "finished", so I wanted to know how the OP got that perception.

He said finished with "game mechanics", not finished with bug testing. They are in Beta, so that is true. It's far too late to not be out of Alpha at this point.
