Install Sizes

If you read the RAGE preview they say its got a 22GB to install which is already over my hard drive space and I think Skyrim will be just as big if not bigger. So I don't want to waste £150 on a 250GB hard drive and a data transfer cable. And from the reviews I've seen on these cables they say when they connect it to their PC they got Trojans and other viruses.

It's possible to upgrade the HD of an xbox with a normal 2'5" laptop drive you can get for like, $50? I don't know how it works, but you can upgrade the PS3 HD quite easily (you can even put in an SSD for some amazing results, and it's supported by Sony), so i figure it shouldnt be too hard for an Xbox either.

That said, why have you gone for a 20gb model?

Dude don't worry the game is on one disc so it is less then 9GB of data (maximum for Xbox 360) I understand that is a lot for your hard drive. mine is 120GB but 2 Discs would not work, it is not like LA. Noire where as it is a linear game and ME2 is a more Story Driven game so you rarely go back to areas on the 1st disc. In skyrim you would have to swap discs multiple times just to go from Solitude to Riverwood.
:tes:

Game is larger than 9GB. There's a limit of 9GB on the disc, but it's mostly compressed data. The xbox will load some data to the hard drive and uncompress it for use if you don't install it, which is why loading times are long and you'll get hiccups during gameplay (loading area like in Oblivion). When you install the game it will likely need 12 or more gb, but it means the xbox doesnt have to constantly copy and decompress data all the time.

Nope. Microsoft conveniently made it so you have to purchase their overpriced HDDs if you want to upgrade a 360.

To be honest I don't follow RAGE but all I know is its a FPS yet it takes up 3 disks, yet it still doesn't play nearly as good if the game installed meaning it should really be put on 4 disks instead of wasting 22GB.

And Skyrim is an RPG open world game full of thousands of cells, weapons, detail, character creation, 150 dungeons, towns, NPC's, scenery, dragons, quests etc... I would assume it would be just as big if not bigger than RAGE meaning we would have to download it as it will probably like F:NV have long loading screens so we would have to install but I'm annoyed about how big its probably gonna be, even 10GB is too big when they can just split it on separate disks.

And even though RAGE is on 2 disks its considered to even run slow at some times.

You will probably have to install Skyrim for it to run at it's best. Rage is supposed to be a FPS sandbox (like GTA 4 but FP) also just because RAGE is a FPS does not mean it is small. This is not MW3 we are speaking about but the game by the creators of the FPS genre. id

Edit: you are jumping to conclusions. Do you really think they are going to release it if it is going to be laggy and slow? they are not stupid, you are exaggerating things

Once again the smallest Blu-Rays have 25GB of space. Epic win.

Multi-disk might well work for other games but Skyrim is so open and free you would be swapping back and forth to go to other sides of the map.

I hope the PS3 makes use of the space on the Blu-Ray with some higher res textures or something.

Because they weren't manufactured by Microsoft I doubt they would work probably not a good idea and wouldn't want to risk loosing data for it and possibly catch a virus. Also doesn't seem any cheaper than buying a normal Xbox HD, but the dilemma is that it costs extra money when multiple disks is more easier.

I have the 20GB model because I brought the 360 rather early and that was the only/cheapest model apart from a tiny 64MB memory stick, so I don't really want to buy like a 250GB to install a game when they can easily put a game on separate disks, sparing us the waste of both money, memory space and time.

Can you please state a game that has done this that is not story driven (ME2. L.A. Noire etc.) and is a PROPER open world game.
If there is one, did it have a major improvement. If there is not one then how can you be so sure it is worth it???

You could be right on some levels, but this is how corporate marketing works, they temp you into buying their game, they make arrangements with Sony, Microsoft etc... to compress their disks to fit their console, this way it makes the game badly graphical and slow, so that person decides to buy an expensive HD so they can install it so they can play the game to its full potential, this brings in money for both the game designers and the console manufacturers.

This could be a reason to why PC has better graphics as disks fit to the format of the computers potential as for the Xbox it can only fit to the 9GB compressed space.

Although what I'm say is probably totally wrong :P

It may bring them money in the short run but then it would cause console gamers to not buy future products by them due to not trusting them, so really they would never do this. Dont worry, have a cookie :cookie:

No... the PS3's Blu-Ray format doesn't need its files compressed and Sony doesn't even sell HDDs, but the PS3 fully supports all 2.5" SATA HDDs as well as 2.5" SDDs... in addition to coming standard with an HDD of some sort. A Blu-Ray disk can hold up to 50 gbs of space. It's only Microsoft that do this.

I think instead of making us install games for better quality I think:

1) They should also have it on separate disks if we wish.
2) Switch to HD DVD's so it can hold more storage seeing how the current format for 360 disks are Dual-layer DVD Rom's which hold only 9GB and seeing how technology has progressed and now games are becoming too advanced for the 360's format we now need to install or have multiple disks.

But most likely seeing how the Xbox 720 will be out in the next 5 years they'll change to either HD DVD's or Blu-Ray, this way we wont need to install or have multiple disks :P

Or could end up in me wasting my money :P Then have to buy the Xbox 1080 in a decade or so

And maybe I will stop buying games altogether for the 360 seeing how badly formatted they are for £40 ($60) and in some respects a rip off especially after having to waste more time and money installing it...

Sadly not, since the PS3 doesn't have the video memory for higher texture resolutions unless they get REALLY creative with memory management. But since this is TES, i doubt that. ;p

I doubt that their will be much difference between the PS3 version and the 360 version of Skyrim. The Install sizes for the consoles, 360 will probably be around 6.5GB, not sure on what the PS3's number is going to be but it will probably be in the same department.
