How many generations since Oblivion?

Post » Thu Sep 22, 2011 12:44 am

I want my Skyrim character to be related to my Oblivion character, but I can't figure out how many generations of that family would be inbetween. Would it be great-great grandson? great great great? I have no idea, I'm terrible at maths.

Interesting question but have no mind for math either sorry! :shakehead:

All we know is that the game takes place 200 years after the events in Oblivion?

Depends on what race he or she is. There is no solid information on how long the races live, but it's commonly thought that high elves live longest, usually speculated to be around 200-300 years, followed by rest of the elves, beasts, and humans last.

I used to use 25 years for a generation, so I'd say 8-ish. Depends if there's a lot of teen-pregnancy in Tamriel...

Around 6th generation if the family was reproducive at early age (around 30). So Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grand Son.

Yes, if the average Life Expectancy is about 50-60-70 (For poor Imperials), I would say between 3-4 generations.

Oh yeah, good point actually. If a race lives on average for 100+ years and doesn't even get around to making babies until over 50, you could have only a couple of "generations". Way to think outside the box. My brain went humans, and humans only.

If your an Elf there might not be a gap due to being able to live a couple hundred years. So if your a High Elf, Wood Elf or Dark Elf you might want to go with the, "My Cousin is the Champion of Cyrodill line".

Depends on how you define generations usually it's the average age difference between parents and childs. So 25-30 years in real life.

If the average childbearing age is 25, it's 8 generations.

Yeah, it's like if you have a kid in 2020, who has a kid in 2040, who has a kid in 2060... But of course it depends on what age people have children at. 25 is more like for modern industrialized societies than less developed agricultural ones, but who knows.

If you're going with humans, I think great-great-great-great (4 greats) grandson is the least you can reasonably do. Otherwise you have to have a lot of generations of people having kids pretty old (which isn't impossible, there are still about 100 children of U.S. Civil War vets alive!). My own great-great grandfather was born about 165 years ago, so to get to 200 years you would need two generations beyond that.

I guess if your Oblivion character was 20 during the game and had a kid at age 80 (4E 60) and that guy had a kid at age 80 (4E 140) you could theoretically have a 60 year old grandson of your OB character. It varies enormously.

In a time or place where women are pregnant every other year from 15 to 45, the average generation is 30 years.

In an average industry nation with two childs at 22 and 28, the generations are 25 years.

In societies where men can have several women and/or are usually much older than their wifes, the average generation can easily go up to 35-40 years.

Here is a page on it...

Seems like 25 is better than 20.

Exactly, but according to the book of her life it's very rare for an elf to live out their full life expectancy. On a side note, my character is the son of the love child she had with Tiber Septim that she thought his healer had aborted.

If I remember correctly, from longest-lived to shortest lived it goes like...

Altmer, Dunmer, Bosmer, Breton, Imperial = Redguard = Nord, Argonian, Orc, Khajiit.

Or something along those lines.
