3D is not a gimmick

Every eye doctor I have seen from age 3 to 30 told me I was stereo-blind and would never see in 3D. So I have basically lived in a 2D world my whole life.

I believed those PhD toting know-nothings in their white lab coats... that is, until avatar came out and I saw 3D for the first time in my life! It was the most amazing experience I've ever known. I imagine it's what it would be like for normal people to all of a sudden see in 4D.

I've since looked at plasma 3D demos at bestbuy and was even more amazed by active 3D technology. It was as if the world inside the screen was more real than the one I was standing in. Now imagine what a world like Skyrim would be to someone like me who has almost no chance of ever seeing 3D without technological assistance... It is not a gimmick for me at all.

I agree, every advancement to entertainment media is usually accused of being a gimmick in its infancy stages. 3D is already pretty cool, so I can't wait to see what becomes of it.

Also, it's awesome that it works for you even with your stereoblindness.

It must be nice to see in 3D 24-7. For me, 3d tech is the only 3D I've ever known.

I understand 3D is great in your situation, and it is very personal. I have seen 3D before, and it is much different from what I see in real life. I don't know if I'm "3D impaired", but my vision is much more similar to non-3D video games. The fact is, 3D is not going to be in the game. It is too late in development, and it would hurt many fans if there was a delay solely for 3D. The game director has already stated he dislikes 3D.

It's really not all that amazing, to be honest. If anyone here doubts it then cover one eye and see how little you notice. It svcks that you don't get the option to turn it back on again but really you're not missing all that much.

Then again I don't do anything that actually requires true stereoacuity. I suppose if I was a hunter or a baseball player or something I'd mind a lot more.

@ lordandre, I was going to try it. I hope it works. But what I'm really hoping is that Bethesda reconsiders and issues an update as was done with certain ps3 games. I suspect that the major problem is that the xbox 360 hardware won't support it, and most of the sales will for that console.

Yeah, but try covering one eye for several years and then see if it's still not a big difference.

That's really nice! I feel for you. We won't have it, unfortunately. I personally don't like it, but then I don't live in a 2d world. Would be nice if the option was available. :)

I would like to point out that seeing in 4D would involve seeing length, width, height and spacetime, which would be impossible and doesn't make sense. I would recommend another anology.

Other than that, I think you presented your case quite admirably. I have a new respect for 3D. I admit that I didn't even know about stereo-blindness until you mentioned you had it. I cannot imagine what it must be like, but I don't exactly want to explain to my parents why I'm wearing an eyepatch in order to find out.

I don't see how 2D pictures infront of other 2D pictures is 3D, and it hurts peoples eyes and looks like crap, so 3D as of now is yes, a gimmick. Its an old technology from the 70's being remarketed. When we real 3D t.v. with holographics and crap will be the day, but until then, we can only anticipate those curved OLED screens which are the next big step.

And unless you consider time to be a spacial dimension ( a lot of people do ) we will never see in 4D. Something in 3D cannot conceive a 4th spacial dimension no matter how hard they think. Its like a cartoon trying to imagine a 3rd one, its not possible.

Just a question...how does one not "see" in 3D, but 2D instead? Wouldn't that mean that your view of the world is like a flat drawing on a piece of paper?(which I'm not sure is possible) The closest thing I can think of is having a lack of depth perception, which doesn't make the world 2D.

Don't listen to the 3d haters, when used right, why would you possibly not want depth in an image that is supposed to give you the illusion of depth?
It's not much different than the same way people claimed color in movies was a gimmick. Seriously, look it up, the parallels are hilarious. Once stereo 3d is tweaked to where we don't need glasses and it's clear without any ghosting, it will be more widely accepted. Hollywood hasn't helped with the saturation of crappy transfers. Avatar used the stereo depth as a medium, as it should be done. Something that 3d games like FPS and tomb raider introduced in the 90s were made to be married with.

3d video games are just amazing, it's like having the games sculpted and looking through a window into a world of living sculptures or living cartoons. People just lack vision and imagination as well as having a knee jerk cynical reaction to all the crappy 3d "flying at your face" gimmick movies of the last 50 years.

Clearly the creative geniuses of our time realize and love the technology, Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, etc. Don't mind the Dunning-Kruegers of the internet feeling superior by dismissing us all as mindless consumers.
