The Future of Nirn

Post » Fri Sep 23, 2011 9:48 pm

Ok, so I was thinking about what Nirn might be like in their equivalent to the 21st century, when suddenly, a crazy idea came to me: What if they made a game about that time period?
Now I know what you guys are thinking. "That sounds stupid." Right? I know it does, but think of the possibilities! Khajiit selling skooma in shady alleyways! High elves in buisness suits! A dark, GTAesq storyline for the DB/Theives guild! Seriously, if someone pulled this off good enough, it might be alot of fun :D!
I mean, sure it'd be different. But different doesn't always equal bad, right? ^_^

P.S. Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong sub-forum or somthing, but I didn't see anywhere for future ES games, and Skyrim seemed like the closest.

I really don't like this idea. I want my fantasy games separate from my GTA.

Sorry, but IMHO this is a terrible idea that I hope never becomes reality.

It won't become GTA, it won't be blasphemous, stop resisting the change! While I like Elder Scrolls medieval fantasy, I think it would be interesting to see an expanded future of what it may be. Seriously, guys... unless everyone in Nirn are complete and utter morons, and if gunpowder does not exist in any way, shape, or form, the inhabitants of Nirn are eventually going to figure out how to make a gun!

Even if it doesn't turn into a game, which I'm not advocating that it does, I think it's stupid to disregard it completely as, well, stupid. It's not, it's evolution. I would love to see some fan fiction of this someday, personally.

It would be easier to mod GTA into a futuristic fantasy game than it would be to modernize an TES game to the 21st century, so it wouldn't really work well as a mod either...

Idk who needs guns when u have magic i mean if u wanna fire projectiles then use a fireball truth is Nirn doesnt have use for guns plus transportaion spells no need for cars or trains.... they dont need to evolve reflect spell to bullets better than body armor

I don't see what's the problem with religion in a modern setting... I mean, just look at real life!

I think the whole point of the Elder Scrolls is to have it in a slightly medieval setting. It is extremely typical fantasy lore, not to mention that what we've explored so far has only been on one continent on the whole planet of Nirn. We haven't even explored the whole continent in full detail. Would making a jump thousands of years in the future really make sense? Would technology really progress in any way with the magical capabilities of most of the inhabitants of the world?

So yeah, I don't think it's a great idea. I do think that Bethesda should make a modern day RPG. Todd Howard has expressed interest, and I remember reading a couple of interviews where he and Pete Hines mentioned that it was on their to-do list. With a crew this big, and one that is consistently growing, I'm sure ideas are kicking around the office all the time. Problem is, now they have two major franchises (The Elder Scrolls and Fallout) which are giant money makers. I don't see them diverting from these two any time soon just for the sake of profit, sadly.

I like the idea accept GTAesque, you kinda spoiled the idea when you put that, but it does remind of some thoughts I had, a time when the Dwemmer and their technology still exist, a sort of retro future.

That does sound kind of cool. If you were actually going to make a futuristic setting though, it would have to have a very dark, steam-punkish aesthetic that complements the lore, and it would be interesting to see where that could be taken. It would possibly take inspiration from http://www.imperial-library.info/content/loveletter-fifth-era-true-purpose-tamriel written by Michael Kirkbride

The problem with your initial idea is that The Elder Scrolls is meant to be a traditional fantasy adventure game and taking that and putting it into a futuristic/modern-like setting would be highly confusing from a marketing stand-point, but also from an artistic point, there would have to be a deeper meaning behind that, and there really isn't any. If they did a 5th Era game, there would be technology, probably advancements to what the Dwemer did, but it would be highly magical in nature. Grand Theft Auto: Elder Scrolls resembling our world, just doesn't sound right, and it makes little sense.
