Increasing Sneak skill

I'm not sure how it worked in previous games, but will your sneak skill improve faster if you're sneaking near two or more things at once as opposed to only one?

If it's anything like previous games that doesn't matter at all. You're gonna end up auto-walking into a wall while in stealth while going to a neighbor's barbeque! :)

In Oblivion I'm pretty sure that it made no difference how many people/creatures were around. An easy way to improve it was to break into someone's house at night and walk around sneaking in his bedroom while he was sleeping.

i always have 100 sneak before the first line of dialog in the game is triggered. I don't know how else they would make it work, but it seems a little silly

edit: in oblivion

I'm thinking it's going to only increase if you do something while sneaking, ie. breaking into a house, killing someone, pickpocketing, etc. Might be one of the hardest to level up this time around.

I'm curious as to whether running around killing people with a dagger will raise the sneak skill now, considering how dagger perks are nestled in the sneak perk tree rather than 1-handed.

In Oblivion, I would always have a 100 Sneak skill before the opening dungeon/escape from the Goblin caves was completed. It took forever, but it was worth it for the rest of the game. lol

As far as Skyrim is concerned, I can only assume it works the same until I play the game. If it is different, then I'm sure someone will post it right after the game drops.

Under 60 days... now the wait is killing me... lol

Maybe if you're in sneak when you do it, i.e., successful backstab.

I think it improved if you walked sneaking for a certain while or something.

In Oblivion, the sneak skill increased by just sneaking around... it's simple but, honestly, I can't think of a better way for it to improve.

I'd personally like sneak to mean something- in Morrowind and Oblivion, if you were sneaking around and people 'saw' you, they ignored it. I'd like to see people treat you suspiciously- I mean come on, you're all stooped over and well, suspicious looking. Make it a real challenge to level up sneak!

I'm pretty sure someone had to be in range of you while sneaking, no? I remember sitting there for awhile in sneak and not getting any points until a guard or someone was in range.

Just do it in a shop or somewhere that people frequent. It svcks to raise it that way, but it didn't seem to go up fast enough to be useful.

It svcked hard in oblivion, auto walking into a corner in a tavern then come back 3 hours later and have 100 sneak is really not good gameplay. But oh well.. I hope it cant be leveled this way but also needs some sort of accomplishment to level it up.

In Oblivion, you have to actually start moving while in sneak for the skill to increase. Standing there while in sneak is not going to do anything. It's like athletics, the more you run the more it increases. I'm pretty there wasn't anything more special than that to raise your sneak skill... because I do it all the time in Oblivion, where no one is around me. I'm not sure if it will raise when you're spotted, though, that is something else entirely.

Yeah, I know you had to be moving. Did the faceplant running into the corner way too many times. I could've sworn there was maybe a better chance to skillup if someone was watching you and it successfully put you into stealth though.

I'm pretty sure stealth kills(finishers) will increment the sneak skill.

Yes, you DO have to be within detection range of an NPC to increment the sneak skill while sneaking. Also undetected attacks while sneaking incremented your sneak skill.
