Quantity vs Quality

Post » Sat Sep 24, 2011 10:46 pm

I was just wondering with Skyrim most likely set to take GOTY and Oblivion winning the title before it and with many people making the claim that "Oblivion is the greatest RPG ever made" I just gotta ask what exactly makes the Elder Scrolls games so great? Now there is no denying that the size of the world the game is set in and the large amount of content on offer are the Elder Scrolls games greatest strengths however size alone does not make a great game, for instance if you compare a game like Deus Ex to Morrowind you will see that it is like comparing a 5 star meal at a fancy resturaunt to the all you can eat buffet table at chucky cheese, while you may get much more to eat at the buffet table you get a far better quality meal at the 5 star resturaunt.

Now dont get me wrong I do enjoy the Elder Scrolls games but I would hardly consider them among the greatest games of all time and I was just wondering with people making out that the Elder Scrolls games are among the finest games ever made is that what people prefer, quantity over quality?

Quality, bethesda actually makes games that they would play instead of other developers just making a game for money. *cough call of duty *cough

With an open world and an incredible amount of choices like TES used to be, quantity is a part of the quality.
Every game needs to find its own balance, but with TES, it has always been a little less quality for more quantity, because you can't have it all. And I'd like to keep it that way.

I don't think they're the greatest. That's all hype, there's far too many games for one to be considered the best at everything, even in a set genre.

Simply put they're fun, and they're fun for a few hundred hours, not enough games can say that anymore.

Morrowind was the 5 star meal and Deus Ex is a buffet at some fast food diner.. Whats your point?

Seriously, I did play Deus Ex, and it was good, I liked it for the time I played it, but it wasnt that good, and looking back, it wasnt memorable or anything, it was a quick fix of entertainment and thats it.

I know a lot of people are going to have a different opinion on this but there are those that consider Oblivion to be the greatest RPG, I had to shudder when the clerk at my local gamestore said that he was not a big fan of RPGs because he played Oblivion which he thought was supposed to be one of the greatest RPGs of all time, I guess he was thinking if Oblivion is supposed to be the greatest RPG he would hate to see the worst :P

This is a Bethesda game studios creation, of course it's going to have both quality and quantity.

(I think you should get rid of the 'vs' and replace it with 'and')

I don't think you can really compare Deus Ex and TES like that, it's a completely different design. They could make TES a more focused experience like Deus Ex, with good quality content all around at the cost of a much smaller world, but that wouldn't make it a better TES game, since the big open world is such an important part of it.

In Deus Ex it isn't about giant open world exploration, it's about doing missions in large non linear levels, and that's what it is good at. But that's not the kind of series TES is.

Quality/quantity needs to be balanced. Both TES and Deus Ex games have it well balanced in their own way.

For me, the TES series has always been more about quantity than quality and polish. Things such as player freedom or choice should rarely ever be sacrificed for slightly better visuals or slightly more polished gameplay.

If I want quality and polish, i'll go play a 30hr linear RPG.

You would take that back if you were really given a true quantity game with pure quantity in mind.

I prefer quality. And the Elder Scrolls gives me A LOT of high quality content. You can't really say that the series doesnt brin some really awesome features to the table.

I voted for quality, as that's extremely important in an RPG. But... as this is TES we're talking about here I'm quite prepared to sacrifice a little of that for some quantity.
