I was in a discussion with a Oblivion and Skyrim hater...

Post » Sun Sep 25, 2011 3:46 pm

I was on this chat thing from a website and people talking about games and such. And someone flat out said Skyrim was gonna svck, that it would be the same old [censored] over again, and even more 'noobified' .How Dark Souls is definitely the better game...how some sites keep comparing these two, i don't know why, but even though both are RPGs..they are VASTLY different from eachother. I haven't really played much of Morrowind..so i can't judge it. So i told him i only really know Oblivion...just a few minutes of Morrowind probably...

Anyway...this is kinda what the guy said

On Skyrim

- skyrim is just a mish-mash of poor mechanics pretending to be a satisfying whole. and on top of that, accessible
- i disagree, morrowind was not, but releasing games based on the exact same template. pretty run of the mill and unoriginal if you ask me
- i mean really, how many times are they going to make us do the same quests across multple games? and i thought zelda was bad for recycling content. lol

On Morrowind and Oblivion

- :it was the better game, deeper, less hand holding, less new player friendly, less....crap
- but you're saying that only with experience with oblivion (n00bified) and what you've seen of skyrim (even more n00bified). ingnorance is bliss as they say?
- so the enemies that levels with you, or the objective markers, or fast travel, or the simplified stat alocation didnt feel like the game was holding your hand?
- i guess you had to come from greener pastures, from a better game (morrowind) to understand
- oblivion was to morrowind, what dragon age 2 was to origins ( I HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHLY DOUBT THIS...lol)
- the enemies that leveled with you, where you could take on an oblivion tower at lvl 0 and it would be just as chalenging at lvl 30? what about that? whats the point in ven having a lvling system when everythng adapts to you anyway? utterly pointless.

- but then you think oblivions system is the norm, hence why you see no issues with it. i like RPGs to have designated areas that have set skill lvl's, something to fight towards
- better yorself to tackle the situation. if enemies adapt to your level, where they can be killed as easily at lvl 0 as lvl 30, then why even have a lvl system? it makes it redundant

So i simply told him i didn't have any problems with what he called problems in Oblivion. Enemies levelling with me? Hell..i guess i never noticed cause plenty of times Oblivion proved to be quite a challenge for me, some frustrating moments even during combat and such. I am glad about the objective markers, without it...i would have probably never have gotten as far as i have now. Fast travel? Nobody is forcing anyone to use fast travel, it's there..when you want it. When i had just gotten Oblivion i didn't go anywhere near that option..i kept exploring and exploring, but when i was tired of that, i used the fast travel. And Skyrim's fast travel will even cost money...noobified? My ass!

I don't know what he's talking about with the Oblivion tower ...but the Oblivion gates were difficult enough imo..nothing wrong with that. Hated them though, lol.

I told him people are talking about Morrowind as if it was the holy grail ,as if nothing was wrong with it and that Oblivion and Skyrim are gonna be soooooooooo dumbed down now. I feel people are exeggerating greatly. I gave the guy an example about Morrowind lacking a fast travel system. He called it good, it forced you to travel trough the diverse landscapes and what not. I know for sure that this kind of thing would start to ANNOY bigtime after awhile. Take Risen for example..the island is NOWHERE near as big as Cyrodiil, but it already started to annoy me alittle when i still didn't had any means of teleportation or fast travel. Forcing the player to do something in a game...is never a good thing in my opinion, and again...nobody is forcing you to use fast travel...use it whenever you want , or not at all.

So my question i guess is simple.....am i seeing it the wrong way, or is this guy completely wrong? Plus he's already fully judging a game that isn't even out yet. I love how some people try to talk down on a game, caling it's predecessor much much better, and they come up with such nonsense as fast travel killing Oblivion..what nonsense. Sure..if the game forced you to do that. Like Morrowind basically forced the player to travel on foot, cause there was no other way. But fast travel is fine....the developer gives the player the chance to go somewhere quickly if he/she wants that, instead of forcing them to press on..and who knows..maybe eventually they'll quit? Choice is much better..fast travel is a choice..nothing more, nothing less.

I hate the term Hater, its [censored] dumb.

and just because he has different opinions then you does not make him a "hater", it just means Skyrim doesn't look that great to him, and you know what I think it doesn't look like anything special either.

I don't think anybody is wrong when it's their own opinion, I love Oblivion and Skyrim but if somebody hates it then I won't argue with them as long as they don't try to force their ideas on me.

^This^, the word is too often used when someone just expresses a difference of opinion.

He raises some valid points, but doesn't exactly present them in a good way.

Hater is supposed to be used for people that are purposely trying to make something look bad to irritate others or somebody that is just jealous of something.

I don't think this guys is a hater but all of his points are very arguable but presents them as solid facts

You guys could take a look at the chat yourself, it's on Gamersyde.com, the box on the right. To be honest...it DID feel like he was trying to force his opinion on me. And again..his argument about Fast travel is utter nonsense really. Bethesda gives you the ability to use it, they don't force you to use it. How did fast travel destroy Oblivion? The guy simply shouldn't have touched that option then...simple as that.

I guess hater is not the right word, but i didn't know what other word was good...cause he basically started the whole discussion with how great Dark Souls is gonna be and how Skyrim svcks...i mean...wow.

I think the more the series progresses the more older fans are already used to the series. I think in part the games have become more "accessible" (what's the problem? umad bro?) but in addition to that the older players are just getting better and more routine about the games, so they say it's becoming easier.

So you can't hate a game you never played, but loving it is perfectly fine?

And Morrowind was a "noobified" version of Daggerfall, which was most definitely a "noobified" version of Arena.

Bah. I have no interest in pretension in video games. Either they game is fun, or it is not.
