Bizarre Graphics Problems

I'm going to try to describe this because I can't seem to take a picture of it. I'm having some really bizarre graphics issues.

I began noticing strange graphics lines appearing in the game. They were similar to the lines that appear when a beast race uses the wrong skeleton. I've seen similar things sometimes when I kill a skeleton. But I've not seen anything like this before.

I noticed the lines for the first time after I installed FCOM and Robert's Female Body/Robet's male body. They don't appear all the time, just randomly. Sometimes it's a thin line across the screen, sometimes it's a rayed line. I notice it once when I was exiting the Imperial City, heading towards Chorrol. Since it seamed to be coming from the Argonian working the "travel stand" as part of Cyrodiil Travel Services, I thought it was part of the beast race problem. I check the appopriate square in Wrye Bash and rebuilt my patch.

Then, while playing this afternoon, it appeared again, but this time on the interface image of my character. A thin, flesh colored line. I discovered I could make it go away by taking off my character's shoes. I put on a different pair of shoes and every thing was fine. About an hour later, while standing in the Anvil Mages Guild, I see the line again. When I open my user interface, there was a thick line running diaganolly acros the screen behind my character.

I exited the game. I searched the forums, Google, but I cam't find anything like this. I've been having problems with Streamline not working - the fog doesn't appear and so I reviewed all my settings there to make sure there wasn't problem. I checked to see if I'd cleaned my mods. I rebuilt my Bashed Patch.

Then I started a new game. I'm using Arthmoor's Alternative Beginnings, the Shipwreck scenario. When I come out of the ship, I can't see the shore. I start swimiming towards it and I get the "objects suddenly appearing" effect. Frustrated, I go into Streamline and turn Streamsight off. When I go back into the game, there are several of these rays, eminating form somewhere out at sea (my character is on the shore) and they are flickering now. They are flickering across the sky. When I open my user interface, I can see the inventory, the map, all that, but my character image is gone. When I mouse over it, I get a flickering image.

I've never had this problem before and I've played Oblivion on this computer for a long time. My graphics card is an onboard NVIDIA GeForce GT330M. I don't think it's the graphics card since I have MOMs installed and switching to my other installs does no produce this effect.

I tried to take a screenshot, but it doesn't turn out. Any suggestsions would be really appreciated.

Did you install mods one (or very few) at a time, testing to see that everything worked perfectly before installing any more each time? Oh, and rebuilding the Bashed Patch every time, and - where necessary - running TES4LODGen each time too?

If not, well, that is the way to do things, particularly if you are new to some/all of these mods. And even more so when mucking around wioth overhauls. Not to mention, multiple overhauls.

The reason being, you can then very easily observe exactly when (and therefore why) something has gone awry. As it stands, you have a lot of mods installed, and any number of (additional) issues might crop up, sorry to say.


edit: Having said that though, have you tried the Mod Checker in Wrye Bash, and also read (and followed) all the advice that running BOSS has given you? And the option to be able to take screenshots is an Oblivion.ini setting. Or, you can use Fraps (or another app if you prefer).

Fair question and thanks for the answer. I'm not new to mods, nor am I new to FCOM. So, to answer your question:

1. I installed the FCOM following the instructions in the FCOM thread on this forum, and using the FCOM install instructions. I cleaned the mods using TES4edit per the instuctions on the TES Construction Set Wiki website, taking care to clean only those marked for cleaning, just as I've done every time I've installed FCOM over the last few years. Following my installation of FCOM, I tested it for several hours and noticed no problems.

2. I next installed Robert's Body mods, etc. Tested. And so on. I can go through it mod by mod, but each mod was tested, checked against the list of mods not to clean TESCS Wiki, and then cleaned if not on the list.

3. Load order was sorted with BOSS. BOSS list was checked extensively. Although, as you say, perhaps I missed something. I'll check it again.

4. Each mod was tested for what it added to the game.

5. The last mod sets I added were the LAME and Supreme Magicka.

6. All of these are mods I'm familiar with and have used before over the last few years (I don't think there's anything new on the list). You're right it could be any manner of mods, and what makes it difficult is it comes and goes. I can play for an hour without any problem. Then, suddenly, the graphic issue appears.

But, no, I didn't just dump 189 esps into my data folder and hope for the best. :)

Good to hear! So many, it would seem, do just that. Sometimes, infuriatingly, thanks to some "guide" or other. Ugh.

I often do this kind of thing, just to cover the bases, especially when I have absolutely no idea what is going on, as is the case here! I wish it was a familiar problem, but - to me - it is not, unfortunately.

I suppose, in reverse, as it were, the next most obvious thing to suggest or point out, is the usual removing one mod (or a chunk of mods) at a time, going from most recently installed backwards, until it rights itself. But then, if issues do not always appear until hours of play have passed... hm. Perhaps you could uninstall the most likely culprits first (i.e., anything that might even remotely touch that area), and see how that goes.

Perhaps something will occur to me (or someone else) in the meantime. Best of luck.


edit: I would add the obligatory "Have you read all the readme files?"* line too, but I have a feeling you do not need that one either.


* For prerequisites, installation instructions, warnings, advice, and (potential and confirmed) compatibility issues, among other things, of course.
