AI pathing problems already?

Post » Mon Sep 26, 2011 12:58 am

Ok I know the games not finished, but I gotta say it. In the gameplay video of skyrim, towards the end, when the PC does a detect life and attacks the two enemies. The way the last enemy tried to approach the PC seemed bugged. He ran and stopped and ran.

Whats your say on this?

I am keeping my expectations low, so that I won't be disappointed when I see NPCs in Skyrim walking into each other and into walls.

Already? Bugs are inherent at this stage of development. Don't let it get to you, all games in beta phase are bugged as hell.

Wow? Why the pessimism? People act like Bethesda is the only person that makes games with bugs. Seeing as how every game has bugs, I don't know where you get it. Frankly, TES hasn't had that many bugs in the scope of things. There are games that have far more bugs that TES did and they were far smaller scope. The larger the game, the more chance of bugs, thus is why MMOs have insane amount of bugs and TES games tend to be nearer the scale of MMOs than a singleplayer game. I think the TES community is too quick to scrutinize things and make a mountain out of a mole hill. Oh look, a floating rock, HORRIBLE GAME, BUGGIEST GAME EVER!!!!1111!!!! There was only like one game killing bug and it affected the minority of players as most people kept Umbra anyhow and it was patched out. The other bugs are minor and only happen when you do a specific thing (usually some crazy combination of events that shouldn't happen in any normal play through anyhow). Personally, I never actually ran into any glitches personally in any of my playthroughs of Oblivion. I found several in Morrowind, Daggerfall, Arena, Battlespire and Redguard, but bugs were even more common back in the day.

I literally just finished watching that video (weird that I saw this thread right after) and noticed that too. I'm guessing it'll be smoothed out in the final game.

You're right, but buggy AI pathing is a curse in most games like Crysis, BF2, CoD to name a few. For me, it's not a matter if a game will have faulty Ai pathing but how much will it have. The nature of computer scripting, unfortunately, lends to this intrinsic error.

So because other games don't have good AI means they shouldn't even try?

as long as he's not running back and forth than running away for 5 minutes trying to find an alternate path before realizing that he could just run IN BETWEEN the rocks and reach you, i consider it an improvement over OB

If TES plans to stay 100% SP game, then yes, it needs a perfect AI (and that's a fact ^_^).

That's funny, it doesn't sound like a fact.

Perfect AI? You mean the thing that has never existed in any game ever made?

Also when on the horse he gets stuck for a milisecond going up the mountain path...

Hopefully these bugs are mostly fixed in the final version.

I dont want my enemies to start running in the wrong direction when my arrows hit them. AI may never become "perfect" but the alternative to perfect AI is definately not dumb AI.

I was more disturbed by one of the TGS videos, where the Redguard lady is cornered and can't reach the player character. She then glitches upwards and reappears in front of the player.

However, such glitches make me a bit nostalgic, and I feel like I'm really playing an Elder Scrolls game. :P

And because you saw a minor glitch that means they haven't tryed then?

Not at all. However, I am not optimistic enough to sit contentedly hoping against all odds that everything is magically fixed without at least some player input by the time the game comes out.

My response was mostly to the other poster...who seemed content to justify things not improving or being bad.

Some glitches make for interesting moments I don't mind them as long as they aren't game breaking things. I never had a game breaking bug except my xbox 360 copy of Oblivon flashes and crashes since the update but i think its either my 360 is dying or because I downloaded it instead of it being off disk. I still believe that lots of what we see in Skyrim videos are because its an old build, I don't however have my expectations so high to say it'll all be fixed but I'm sure alot will.
