Playing as the other gender

Alternatively, quite a few people enjoy playing a game that offers a range of different character builds, and want to vary their playthroughs?
Nope, must be a psychological problem.

I love how you use sarcasm as a satirical way to discredit what I've said yet fail to rebuke it with any valid information thus rendering your point completely moot. Thank you though.

Not really, that is very different. Here we just have people pretending to be someone else.

"Dissociative identity disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis and describes a condition in which a person displays multiple distinct identities or personalities (known as alter egos or alters), each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment. Each sub personality or alternate personalities have a unique set of memories, behaviors, thoughts and emotions related to each specific personality."

Looks to me like it describes it perfectly.

Funny story, when I very first started playing World of Warcraft 6 years ago ( you know, before it got dumb) a friend introduced me to it, so I roled a character on his server and started playing. About an hour he logged on and come over to spot me some loot/cash and wisdom and he shows up a nightelf FEMALE, so the next day I see him at wortk and I'm laughing so hard I'm crying I say
"DUDE, you play F-ing girl, thats so gay!"
and he replys
"Yeah I'm staring at some chick in skimpy outfits, what are you staring at when you play, now whos gay?"
... I never played female characters but I dont laugh at people who do anymore

Yeah, I had a very similar experience. A friend got me into Final Fantasy XI years ago, and when we met up he was playing a girl. I don't remember his character's name, but it wasn't apparent from his name which gender he was, so it was a shock at first. He explained he'd rather be looking at a girl's butt all day while playing than a guys. And I guess I get that. But I'm definitely one of those people that places myself in the roll, so it's not as if I'm staring at some random dude's backside while I'm playing. I'm just seeing me from behind.

Yes I admit I like to play my female character in WOW because men are so stupid as to favor women even when they are made of pixels. I get crafting discounts, instance invites, no dirty talk and all sorts of things just because my woman pala is good looking lol.

LOL This happened to me all of the time when I used to play. I can still remember this one guy following me around the Undercity telling me that "my character was hot" and offering me free stuff. After trying to ignore him, I just lied and said "I'm a dude". He was like..."oh, my bad." and I never saw him again.

Don't know why it does.

Pretending and actually having "a distinct set of memories, behaviors, thoughts and emotions related to each specific personality" are two very obviously different things.

I pretty much always play as female characters, unless males for example, look the best for the race/class combo in WoW. Dwarf males for paladins, orc males for shaman etc.

My first, and probably all my chars in Skyrim will be female.

I see no real problem with people playing whichever six char they want, but then again, maybe i'm not an insecure as a lot of people here seem and dont need to compensate by attacking people who play as the opposite six.

LOL I like that, content for each six!

YOU CHOSE MALE:
When lost, dont ask for directions perk (Map and compass disabled!)
Got drunk and woke up with a fat nastey perk (Minor speed increse)
Females talk back too much perk (Hand to Hand criticals X3 damage)
Stop Criminal Scum perk! (must stay indoors at night if playing a red guard male or risk being arrested for doing nothing wrong randomly)

YOU CHOSE FEMALE:
Kitchen is your friend perk (+40 to cooking)
Know your role perk (Inventory is very tidy and easy to navigate)
Gona get mine perk (Allows in game marriage and unlocks in game divorce)
Crazy B*&$H! (Steering horse controls inverted)
:gun:

Ah man, as hilarious as that is it's probably not going to help the flow of reasoned debate in this thread...

I generally don't really roleplay, so I stick to male.
My character is basicly me, I take decisions based on what I would do irl.

Sure, I tried out female characters once. Same way I tried out the Dark Brotherhood; just for the hell of it. But it never really lasts for me.

Yes. I rarely play humans though, I always go for elves... I find they suit the archetypal "Mage" class best.

My main character is a female, but I'm male.

She was about the tenth character I created after finding all the "guys" I played to be pretty boring. I don't know why, but I think role-playing the opposite gender really allows me to think in ways that are very different from my own real ideas, but not feel quite so artificial when doing it. In other words, when I play a guy they tend to be like me. When I play a female I can create a new personality in a new world and I don't feel like I'm doing something fake. It ends up being a lot more fun.
