A fix for stuttering ish (PC version)

Post » Wed Sep 28, 2011 4:56 am

Stuttering is an issue in Ob, FO3, and non Beth games like GTA IV. I wanted to give people a tip that can help, especially for multi/quad core users. I'm telling you guys here because I noticed it in the Skyrim videos. Although an early build, it may be in the game still.

In your bios, there is an option to have the ram "ganged" and "unganged". Most PCs default to unganged. What that means is each core has access to an equal amount of ram.

So if you have 4 cores, and 2 sticks of 4gb ram, each 2 cores will use 4gb each. This helps a lot with multitasking, but isn't very helpful in gaming.

I've switched mine to "ganged". This means all my cores have access to the entire amount of ram (8gb). Although no game needs that amount, it gives it space to use ram in the whole pot if you like, instead of splitting it.

Although maybe not a complete fix, this helped me a tonne in OB and GTA IV, and don't see why it won't help in skyrim :)

Never had a stuttering issue with any game really, especially oblivion. This is also new to me as it really isn't an epidemic. Maybe more can reply to break down its severity.

You could buy an SSD also to improve stuttering and decrease load times.
Other than that clean boot and keep your hdd defragged.

This is something to try if all other things have failed. Sometimes with a game it's not the HDD, or CPU, or GPU, it's how it accesses ram. But with any game, any of the mentioned hardware can be a problem.

It's just good to have a fix for any situation :) and the ganged ram thing is something not many people know about.
