I loved Oblivion, I mean really loved it. I bought the game the day it came out and spent a week at home from school playing it (I was 17 at the time). I have probably racked up 100s of hours in TESIV so don't think I'm hating on the game.
Something that has really bugged me about game's today is the difficulty. Almost every sequel today and most games in general are getting progressively easier to cater to the newer generation of gamers who need everything shiny, fast paced and one button away. It is also my opinion that the new generation of gamers are this way because everything in life today is shiny, fast paced and one button away.
When I first played Morrowind (about 9+ years ago) I was blown away. I had never been so immersed in an RPG in my life. When I played Morrowind I was just another kid who played Fifa Games and GTA. I found Morrowind incredibly difficult but with each challenge came new rewards. In Morrowind I never felt safe, everything was a shock and I would think twice before opening a door. When I saw someone on the road I wouldn't know whether to run or try my chance at a fight. Morrowinds main quest was tough, I was constantly stuck and sometimes I really had absolutely no idea where or what to do, I would wander around reading journals and exploring until I finally found what needed to be done.
Oblivion as beautiful as it was was incredibly dumbed down challenge wise. Everywhere I explored in the game I felt like Zeus, I was untouchable, I ran through caves as fast as I could blowing away zombies left and right. I could instantly teleport anywhere I wanted to, at no point in the entirety of the game was a ever challenged with a quest and if I ever was I had a mini homing beacon that would lead me towards my objective.
The newer generation of gamers need everything easy because thats what they are used to. What Developers need to realize is that challenge keeps people coming back and it keeps people interested.
TESV Skyrim in my opinion needs less Fable3 and More Elderscrolls 3 Morrowind.
You guys are the best devs in the business. Thanks for the 100s of hours I have spent in Tamriel.
