Roleplaying as Conan

Post » Thu Sep 29, 2011 6:41 am

I've had a long standing tradition of playing Conan in just about every rpg I've owned. I consider Conan to be one of the best, if not the the best, fantasy characters in literature. Unfortunately film and game versions have been less than stellar in they're half-ass portrayal of the actual character, usually relegating him to the "stupid, naked barbarian". This type of Conan couldn't be further from the truth.

What are race and skills would best reflect Howard's version of Conan? Here's what I've come up with and the reasons and references(kind of)...

WARRIOR:
Smithing - (maybe) Conan's grandfather was a blacksmith, so it can be assumed that he knows his way around a forge

Heavy Armor - (No) Conan's a warrior, so heavy armor would be useful, but Conan has discarded plate for his more preferred chain armor in the stories

Block - (Yes) Useful as a warrior

One-Handed - (yes)

Two-Handed - (yes)

Archery - (No) Conan is skilled with the use of bows and has used one for ship to ship battles, but considers it a cowards weapon(easy for a unbeatable swordsman to say, right!)

STEALTH
Alchemy - (No)

Light Armor - (Yes) Conan is often described in mail, and/or sca

Speechcraft - (No) Conan does become a statesman later in life, can tell a hell of a good tale, has a natural talent for languages, and can be very intimidating, but Speechcraft, in ref. to TES, is more for the "civilized" man

Sneak - (Yes) Conan was a very skilled thief at the beginnings of his career, and could move silently in mail(possible perk  )

Security - (Maybe) Conan is a thief, and in TES it's almost a must for stealing, even though he generally doesn't pick locks in the stories

Mercantile - (No) no need when you take what you want :toughninja:

THE RACE:
What would be the best race to enhance the stats for Conan? While the Nord would be the initial choice because they mimic the Cimmerian "type" most of all, considering sliders can be used to change eye color, skin tone and such, the race is inconsequential.

Here are the standard equip types Conan uses in his various adventures according to RE Howard,

Battle or Ranging - mail armor, horned steel helm, leather boots, broadsword, shield,
Thieving, pirating, tropical exploration - long bladed sword(sabre, cutlass, longsword, etc.), breeks, sandals

What ya'll think? Feel free to throw in some Conan do's and dont's (Conan never uses magic), or whatever you like...

I'm a Conan fan myself, and my favorite table top RPG character is a Barbarian similar to Conan, and I've played him for about 20 years now =). You're definitely right in that he's a smart and crafty character, not a brainless barbarian as typically portrayed. He has traveled the world, and is familiar with various cultures, and has picked up languages, customs and skills from all of them. I think Skyrim would be a good place to roleplay him, and you've got a great setup there. I'd definitely pick Nord as race.

I'm doing a vaguely conan build as well. I think speechcraft is for him since hes very convincing and good at negotiation when necessary. Also Im going to take on archery. I see Conan as an all around wanderer warrior, therefore light and versatile and highly offensive. I wont be doing two handed unless 2 handing a 1 handed sword is somehow of interest to me. I dont see the point in doing both since it will only make ur character weaker. I'm also considering taking on alchemy if its tied to cooking. He spent a long time on the road and needs sustenance for what he does. Plus I wont be using potions or any of this magic tom foolery. U either kill them or they kill you. if they kill you just be better.
oh and def nord.

I will stick with:

Nord

Two-handed
Block
Archery

Sneak
Lockpicking
Light Armor

Purely for gameplay reasons I would add Smithing and justify it via the http://conan.wikia.com/wiki/The_Riddle_of_Steel.

There is a problem whereby you have to buy the 1H sneak perk to get to the Archery sneak perk. This basically wastes a perk if you are trying to go pure 2H but want sneak arrow attacks for hunting. However you could just ignore sneak damage perks I guess. I would want a lot of 2H, block, light armor and archery perks so it's not the end of the world. But to me, sneak is part of Conan's style as a tomb-robber.

You said Conan, I though Conan O'Brien.

You just gave me an idea for a speech-centered character. :foodndrink:

What is best in life?

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.

That is what I will be trying:

Nord (duh)

-Destruction
-2 Hand
-1 Hand
-Light Armour
-Smithing
-Restoration (thor was also a god of 'healing')

In Norse mythology, Thor (from Old Norse Tórr) is a hammer-wielding god associated with thunder, lightning, storms, oak trees, strength, the protection of mankind, and also hallowing, healing, and fertility. The cognate deity in wider Germanic mythology and paganism was known in Old English as Tunor and in Old High German as Donar (runic tonar ?????), stemming from a Common Germanic *Tunraz (meaning "thunder").

@ OP -

Go with a Nord who specializes in light armor, 2-handed weapons, smithing, and speechcraft(for intimidating NPC's).
