Should I buy Oblivion?

Post » Thu Sep 29, 2011 2:31 am

Hello all, in the past year I have become a huge Fallout fan and I absolutely loved Fallout 3 and New Vegas. With all the hype over Skyrim, I'm now interested in the Elder Scrolls. I have never played a TES game before, so I don't know what to expect from Oblivion. If I do buy Oblivion, it would definitely be the steam version. Money is not an issue and I honestly don't care if Oblivion's graphics are outdated. My question you guys, is, should I buy Oblivion? And if yes, what version should I get (GOTY or Deluxe)? Thanks!

Yes, takes a shocking lead:)

The longest journey begins with a single step!

Definitely you should. The prices are way low and the GOTY will offer you lots of gameplay. You'll get a look at the Empire before Skyrim comes out and learn a bit about the lore. It's my favorite game of all time...at least until Skyrim gets here. Have a great time! :)

If you have any interest in a "sword and sorcery" type setting with a deep (and albeit very convoluted) history and lore, then I would definitely get the game. Also, expect to invest a serious amount of personal time before you see a satisfactory return in understanding of the world of Nirn; It requires a tad bit more of you being involved as it's much less about shooting your way through ghouls and drinking from toilets than pausing to understand what it is you're doing and why. Fallout is a base and profane survival game in a post-apocalyptic-alternate-earth , TES not so much... It invites you to come and live as you like and be a part of the world.

Although Oblivion was the 4th installment of the series (not including two spin-offs) it will definitely give you a better perspective on exactly what the series is about, and help you to appreciate Skyrim tenfold.

GOTY is KOTN and SI. Nothing more. The remaining DLC is only available through KOTN discs or from Bethesda's store (currently not online).

No offence at all to the OP, but it still amuses me that people today haven't played previous Elder Scrolls games (Oblivion a prime example), it's almost scary that Oblivion was released five years ago and Morrowind nine!
It must be crazy to those who've followed the series from it's humble beginnings with Arena!

To answer your question though, definitely yes! As Kicenna said, Oblivion is my favourite game of all time, and I expect that title to be challenged by Skyrim.

If you invest yourself in it properly, Oblivion will last you months upon months, and for the price it is these days, it's well worth it!
