Help my clear my confusion of my motherboard and GPU

Post » Thu Sep 29, 2011 10:51 pm

Ok so. Little story first.

My PC was bought from cyberpower.
about 6months later i was gonna upgrade/buy new ram modules, so i phoned up cyberpower technical support for advice. and all i got was bull.
they said "your new ram modules need to be by the same make and they need to be same size as your other ones" lmao. hell no. i had at the time 2x2GB i then bought a further 2x4GB and no bad things happened since(same clock speed of course).

Now it comes to the gpu and motherboard.
I currently have 1 5770 and im looking to get another for crossfire.
I asked cyberpower again and they said.
Your first slot is x16 and second is
x8 but your gpu is not fast enough to go past the x8 benchmark so you WILL see an improvement in crossfire. ( even though the specs of the card is 2.1 x16 )
but then when i look on the manual of my motherboard it says first slot x16
second is x4

Clear my confusion please. what is right and whats wrong?

motherboard: (GA)PH67-UD3-B3
GPU: Ati 5770 1GB GDDR5
Btw. My PSU is sufficient enough just incase any of u wanted to know :P

on your mobo you got 1x16 speed slot + 1x4 speed slot, maybe when crossfired they go at 4+4, mine go at 8+8.

JaredzzC, i've confirmed you board in crossfire will be 4 + 4, i've a gigabyte mobo too and these are the two compared >>

Multi-Graphics Technology

1. Support for ATI CrossFireX?
* The PCIEX16 slot operates at up to x4 mode when ATI CrossFireX? is enabled.

RAM of the same specs should be used, because even though the frequency may be the same, the timings will likely be different, as may be the required voltage.
Just because you got away with it does not mean it is correct :).
